Many details in this page are wrong.

I suspect that this page may conflate two individuals.

One of them is the George McDiarmid who is my paternal grandfather. According to the register of births, he was born on 17 July 1879 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire. He died in 1966, not 1946 (in the same month England won the world cup).

George's father was illiterate so didn't object when the registrar named his son "McDermid" (which happens to be how the name is usually pronounced in Scotland).This isn't helpful when doing genealogical research. In later life George was well aware of this mistake, and styled himself "McDiarmid", as well as ensuring that his two sons had the correct spelling from birth.

George definitely played for Aidrieonians (winning a Scottish Div 2 championship medal, which I still have, in 1902-3). In England he played for Grimsby Town and, I think, Notts County. He was certainly not a centre-half, playing in midfield. It was always my understanding that his last club was Glossop at the time they were in Division Two, having been relegated from a solitary season in the top division in 1900. Certainly he married a Glossop woman and lived in Glossop until shortly before his death. His eldest son was my father. 145.224.81.109 (talk) 13:21, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
