The presence of a world class tuba player in the third chair clarinet section of the annual "Do It Yourself Sousa Concert" is a sight to behold. Other third chair clarinet players in that ensemble are generally mature women who play once a year. Between songs, the third chair members will engage in small talk amongst themselves. The first year that Gene attended a rehearsal, he was surrounded by the "bad boys from the back row" (the tuba players) much to the astonishment of his fellow clarinet players. The ladies now expect their friend to be the center of attention of the tuba section players, sometimes numbering up to fourteen musicians, during the breaks in rehearsal.
