Name

[edit]

The name "Gate of the Ears" does not seem to appear in any English sources and does not appear to be its primary name even in Spanish (as another editor seems to have noted long ago in Spanish above). Because it's a minor monument, it's hard to find much about this gate in English, but the Official Guide of the Alhambra and Generalife refers to it as: "Puerta de Bibrambla: The Bab al-Ramla or the Puerta del Arenal, commonly known as Bibrambla or Bibarrambla, and also as the Arch of the Ears, was (...)". Similar information can be found on the offical site here and here. This name is also found in other scholarly sources, e.g.: "Gate of Bibrambla" in A Companion to Islamic Granada ([1]; see index where the English name is listed) and "Bibrambla Gate" in Islam: Art and Architecture ([2], p.296). And it can be found in other guidebooks and references if one searches Google Books (e.g [3], [4]). Aside from the guidebook quoted above, the name "Arch of the Ears" is mentioned in passing here, but I could find it nowhere else.

Given this evidence, Bibrambla or Bibarrambla appears to be its common name today. Which exact spelling to use seems inconsequential, but "Bibarrambla" seems to be slightly more frequent. R Prazeres (talk) 17:03, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
