@Premeditated Chaos:, @Gryffindor:, in a book by Dorsey here not cited in the article he says it's pronounced "Goon". According to this there's a Benin tribe called Gún (also pronounced Goon). Dorsey using idiosyncratic spellin g might be a reason why there's no other references. According to this which may not be RS, they have an alternative name of Egun which itself appears to be an alternate name of the Ogu people for which we already have an article. The Joshua Project is extremely sketchy. It's a missionary project devoted to cataloguing the "least-evangelized" people and then targeting them for conversion. Super creepy and also I doubt they have any scholarly rigor. ♠PMC♠ (talk)10:23, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. But there are references to Gun and Gún people in Google books - so it may be that's a more common spelling. DeCausa (talk) 10:26, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - I ought to have Googled more before I replied, but searching for "Gun tribe Benin" gave me Gun language, which is spoken by the Ogu people (reasonably backed up by RS in those articles), so I think it's reasonable to conclude that Dorsey just fucked up and thought the name of the language was the name of the people. I think it might be safest to redirect this page to Ogu people. ♠PMC♠ (talk)10:27, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
