Hat-trick

[edit]

The article states "He was one of only six players (and the only Englishman) to record an international hat-trick in the nineteenth century". I don't think that this is correct as I can see several instances of England hat-tricks before Smith's in 1899. There are 4 listed at List_of_England_players_with_only_one_cap#Prior_to_1914 and these are only for players with only one cap.

If you look at [1] there were 13 England hat-tricks before Smith's. Furthermore, the 13-2 scoreline was not a record as England beat Ireland 13-0 on 18 February 1882. Daemonic Kangaroo 17:12, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's a 'cap'?

[edit]

"20 caps and 11 international goals" - what's a cap? Basilwhite (talk) 15:05, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A cap is really just a synonym for "appearance". That is, Smith played for England 20 or 21 times. Traditionally, national football associations award tassled caps to players each time they represent their countries. This custom dates back to 1886. See |cap(sport).
