Jeanne d'Arc (R 97)French cruiser Jeanne d'Arc (R97) — New name is more consistent with naming conventions spelled out at WP:NC-SHIPS. Also, the majority of French ship articles that have pennant numbers have unspaced pennant numbers, like R97, rather than R 97 as styled currently. — Bellhalla (talk) 15:10, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

De-commissioned, maybe not?

[edit]

This ship still seems to be listed as an active service ship. In other words not yet decommissioned. <http://www.defense.gouv.fr/marine/base/unites/batiments_de_combat/jeanne_d_arc/presentation> It seems to appear on all ministry of defence and french navy sites as an active duty ship. Currently deployed to Brest with an officer training role and active service deployment in time of war as currently described in the WP article. Felix505 (talk) 15:33, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

wednesday, june 9, 2010, Jeanne d'Arc (R 97) The Jeanne d Arc serves as a helicopter cruiser, fielding a variety of rotorary-wing elements. ..."the vessel is in active service with the French Navy though she is slated to be decommissioned by 2011. The primary role of the Jeanne d'Arc is in the training of French Navy pilots though her air arm can be called upon (in a time of war) to take to the offensive with her various multi-role helicopter systems."

Hi Dark Nark, good work. I thought all the announcements in May seemed to have a lack of finality about them and that JDA seemed to just linger a bit. from your reference supplied: http://www.boc.sga.defense.gouv.fr/visu/boc_visu4.php?nor=B1050979S&id=34670 Page 1 OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE ARMED Chronological Edition No. 26 dated June 25, 2010 PERMANENT PART Navy Text No. 27 DECISION No. 0-25103-2010/DEF/EMM/STN change of position on the helicopter carrier "Jeanne d'Arc." The necessary disarmament operations , footnote b), shall be conducted under the authority of the Admiral commanding the Naval Action Force (ALFAN). For the Minister of Defence and delegation: The Commissioner-General of 1 re class Deputy Chief of Staff "support and finance", Hubert SCIORELLA. I think you should edit the article to show "removed from active service 7 June, 2010" and cite to the above. The blog on the proceedings in September although informing may not be a good enough source. Lets try and find something better to cite and just list the removed from active service info for now. Make sure to cite to the boc.sga.defense.gouv.fr you have provided. I will keep on the look out as well for something more 'official' on September 1: ship loses flag and its name. It is good to see some information on this turn up. Felix505 (talk) 04:00, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Good job Felix505. As soon as I have other informations in the Official bulletin of the armed, I cite this source in this article.Dark Nark (talk) 19:03, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ship numbers

[edit]

The french navy commonly uses a space between the character and the numeral when describing a ship' 'but does not use a space when describing the 'class' of ship. ie:

Porte-hélicoptères

  • Porte-hélicoptères Jeanne d'Arc ('R 97)

Frégates anti-sous-marines type F67

  • Frégate Tourville (D 610 - Équipage mixte)
  • Frégate De Grasse (D 612)

Frégates antiaériennes type F70 AA

  • Frégate Cassard (D 614)
  • Frégate Jean Bart (D 615)

please see <http://www.defense.gouv.fr/marine/decouverte/equipements/batiments_de_combat/liste_des_batiments_de_combat_de_la_marine_nationale_par_unite> and <http://www.defense.gouv.fr/marine/decouverte/equipements/batiments_de_combat/jeanne_d_arc/jeanne_d_arc_r_97>

Accordingly this article is in conflict with formal naming and numbering protocols of the French Ministère de la défense and the the Marine nationaleFelix505 (talk) 15:48, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Years in the caption & description differ

[edit]

I've noticed that the years in the caption and image description do not match on the gallery photograph "Boat rescued by the Jeanne d'Arc".

The caption states "4 April 1988" whilst the description says "4 April 1968".

I can't read the date off the placard shown in the photograph and a google maps photo taken in April 2018 (Musée National de la Marine - Brest) shows the stone base without the boat.

Unable to find any other sources, very much unable to visit the museum. Thought I ought to point it out. Cleopatra1779 (talk) 19:19, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Cleopatra1779. The placard doesn't seem to mention a date or rescue ship name. I ran it through OCR (not 100% accurate given the blur) and then Google translate. Maybe the photographer @Rama can confirm the details (they don't seem to be active but this mention should notify them of this discussion).
The date was changed from '68 to '88 by an IP in 2018, so probably vandalism. I think I will assume the uploader was originally correct and restore the original date. A proper source would be good though. Commander Keane (talk) 22:21, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After clicking on the image twice and then zooming in once, I've picked out some keywords. For reference 5 paragraphs (Number of lines per para, 1,2,4,3,3). Translate using Google translate.
Para 2, Line 2 - seems to read "LE 4 AVRIL xxxx" with avril = april and the text after that looking like four numbers.
Para 3, Line 1 - "porte hélicoptères" = helicopter carrier.
Para 3, Line 2 - "JEANE D ARC" = Jeanne d'Arc.
Para 3, Line 3 - "AU COURS CE SA CAMPAGNE" = during this campaign.
Para 3, Line 4 - Looks like a pair of years with a dash between them (xxxx - xxxx), first two numbers for both either 15 or 19 with 19 making more sense. 4th number 1st year might be a 7 but that is very much a guess. Possibly the campaign mentioned in Para 3, Line 3.
Para 5, Line 1 - 4th word, number, does look like a 40 or 41. With the next word looking like "réfugiés" = refugees.
Para 5, Lines 2&3 - "Hommes" = Men, "Femmes" = Women, "Enfants" = Children. With numbers before them (maybe H.15, F.15 and E.10 totaling 40).
Ran the transaltion using the page as linked in the reply after zooming in and the words match up with most numbers being unreadable to the program.
The result being,
"EMBARCATION DES BOAT PEOPLE
RECUELLS ON MER DE CHE
LE 4 AVRIL 683
PAR LE PORTE HELICOPTERES
EAVE ARC
A3 COURS DE LA CAMPAGNE
A BORD DE CETTE EMBARCATON

3 M. CE LARGE
AVENT PRIS PLACE A REPUCES
