[edit]article needs expansion. there is not much in the way of the french army other than a list of current units (which should be a separate article?). compare with the british army article which is good--203.218.92.126 02:46, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Quite agreed. The French Navy article is undertaking a similar refit which is quite beneficial. Rama 07:52, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
Image:Armee de Terre organigramme.png
[edit]I removed the image Image:Armee de Terre organigramme.png from the article, as it contains to many errors. i.e.:
- the 1st and 3rd Brigade are Brigades mécanisée and not Brigades motorisée
- the 2e régiment de dragons is (since July 2005) not anymore part of the 2e Brigade blindée but part of the Brigade du génie and a NBC Defence Rgt. And not a Tank Rgt.
- the symbol for the units of the logistics Brigades is wrong- these are not combat supply units
- the 13e Régiment de Dragons Parachutistes belongs to the Brigade des forces spéciales terre and does so since July 1st, 2002! (since 5 years!)
There are many, many more errors and clearly the graphic is anything but the actual structure of the French Army. What surprises me is that there is a complete and current (2007) listing of all units of the French Army and a correct graphic (except for the materials bases and support centres) in the article Structure of the French Army, to which this article links. Even the French, Italian and German wikipedia articles are correct and up to date. Therefore I removed the graphic and suggest a major update and correction of it. --noclador 23:49, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Equipment
[edit]The ERC-90 and the AMX-10 RC are listed here as light tanks. Neither is tracked, and so really don't qualify as tanks. Should "Light Tank" be changed to Armoured Car? Good Skoda (talk) 20:40, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
- It is a matter of definition, apart from being wheeled vehicles, overall their aspect is more that of a tank than an armoured car, after all they carry respectively a 90 mm and 105 mm canon not a machine gun unlike armoured cars. The AMX 10RC share its automotive components whith the AMX 10P which is a tracked armoured personal carrier.
Although the 10RC is wheeled its front wheels can't turn, and is therefore driven like a tank. Overall, it is probably not so easy to classify them in either categories as they are more like hybrids between an armoured car and a tank. Also, but I don't have reference, when the 10RC was designed, there was a lot of discussion amongst French military, whether it should be tracked or wheeled. It's function is also hybrid, as it is an armoured reconnaissance vehicle and therefore could qualify as an armoured car but also that of a tank but with very poor protection favouring speed and agility to heavy armour. Just a question.
[edit]Didnt see a mention if the Vichy French goverment had an "Army"(They did have a Navy I know) Was this the Milice? Should it be mentioned in article? Merci',Thanks! (datedAfeternoon,Mn.Sept.21,2009,21stcent,by Dr. Edson Andre' Johnson D.D.ULC>) ANDREMOI (talk) 22:03, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
- It was a very peculiar period, the French Army was devided, some units joined the Free French Forces to continue the fight against the Nazi and some recognised the Vichy regime as its legitimate authority. There was several occasions, when both sides confronted each other on the battlefield in Africa and the Middle East. Blastwizard (talk) 10:49, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- During Vichy era, the milice was a paramilitary organisation dedicated to hunt opposition. Nothing to do with the army, stayed under command of the armistice government or not.--Closter (talk) 09:56, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

== Size ==gurkha the best land fighter of the world in history may be the alternatives think..
I would just like to say that the British Army is in fact larger than the French army. This means that whoever keeps changing the facts to "the French army is the largest in the EU" is wrong. Please don't if you're doing that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.169.201.4 (talk) 01:35, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
- It depends whether you count only professional professional soldiers, Fench Army has nearly 10 000 more personnel (123,100) than the British Army (113,970), but if you include the reserve, British Army is then larger; because the TA is a large non professional reserve force, whereas the reserve in the French forces it is mostly former professional soldiers who left active service, the other difference is that in the French army reserve units are embedded as batteries, companies or squadrons wihtin professional regiments. Also, military service in France has not been abolished but suspended and there is still possibility to reinstate it altghough it is highly unlikely. If you count non professionals soldiers then the Bundeswehr is probably by far the largest army in the EU since it still has many conscripts. Blastwizard (talk) 10:02, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
The British army employs 113 thousand regular soldiers. It also employs a further 167 thousand soldiers, who have been trained to a professional standard. These men are soldiers too, and should be counted.
Willdasmiffking (talk) 14:29, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thinking that reserve units have the same level of training as an active unit is simply dellusional, they may have had some training but they can't keep up with the level of active soldiers and are therefore not readily available for frontline duty. The rest is political gesticulation. Blastwizard (talk) 10:01, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- The British TA reserve force do indeed engage in frontline action on a regular basis. G.R. Allison (talk) 08:06, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

France second largest army in the European Union and the 4th largest in NATO ? But british too ?
[edit]There are a problem.
In this article, we can see that the French army is the second largest in the European Union and the 4th largest in NATO. But in the article of the British army we can see that there is the second largest in the European Union and the 4th largest in NATO too.
Where is the truth ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.45.204.9 (talk) 20:40, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Uniforms
[edit]The Uniform section currently has information about uniforms of the Republican Guard. It is already in the equivalent section of the National Gendarmerie article so, it should be removed from this article. --Dreddmoto (talk) 01:05, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
