Is the group still active?--Rhydd Meddwl 19:37, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not since the 60s, I think. -- Arwel (talk) 12:00, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shame

WRA

[edit]

My history techer claimed to have met the entire Welsh Republican Army, who numbered about half a dozen. Does anyone know if any such organisation ever exised?

Name of the insignia

[edit]

I think the eagle is 'eryr gwyn' rather than 'eryr wen'. I have changed the article accordingly. However, there is a slim chance i'm wrong.

Flagspot's article on the White Eagle of Wales flag gives both names, unsourced. --Stlemur 19:23, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've dug into the grammar a bit, and my impression has been reinforced:

'eryr' means 'eagle', and both 'gwyn' and 'wen' mean white, but the former is, to gloss over the details of Welsh grammar, the form used with masculine nouns, and the latter that with feminine nouns (okay, that's actually 'gwen', but the leading g gets removed by a soft mutation when following a feminine noun, see?). Since 'eryr' is masculine, 'eryr gwyn' is correct. However, i am by no means a Welsh speaker, so i could have the wrong end of the stick here. Both forms can be seen in the wild (ie on the intertron), in broadly similar numbers, which is weird.

Accordingly, i've gone back on my word, and haven't changed the article.

Original research

[edit]

In sources, "Testimony given by past members" implies original research very strongly to me. me_and 18:07, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was shocked to read here that Cosslett had died in 2004. This to me is an indication that more original research is needed before this information is lost forever - although by the very nature of the activities I can see that some people might not want to be talking much about their past activities. To my knowledge only one book in english deals with MAC/Free Wales Army and that is "To dream of freedom" which I found very useful although from an historian's perspective it is probably a bit biased towrds the rebels. (I am not dismissing the Welsh language sources but not being fluent - to my shame - I cannot comment on them)Perhaps evidence trawled from period documents might be useful on here? For example, the transcripts of the police interviews could give new insights but I do know if this sort of information is available to public or not. (I suspect not, depite the time that has lapsed since the interviews)

Number of members

[edit]

This article claims that the number of active members is unknown, then says there were 2000. Which should we stick with? Helikophis (talk) 14:45, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation to a Welsh-American Republican - from " Y Repwblic " ( " Civ " ) - about " The White Eagle " symbol used by " Byddin Rhyddid Cymru " ( " Mil " ) - and abused by others

[edit]

[ AN INTERNAL DOCUMENT PUBLISHED TO CLARIFY THE SITUATION FOR THIS PAGE : I LEAVE THE WIKI WELSH TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THIS CONTRIBUTION ]

From: Sent: 18 November 2018 11:23 To: Subject:

Dear XXXX,

" Social engineering and misinformation for sure." - Unfortunately not : their symbol has been picked up and is used by far-right groups.

I myself have confronted those who have been abusing it and have been threatened with violence : The Free Wales Army are different.

The origins of The White Eagle on The Black Flag and The Black Eagle on The White Flag - the latter arguably The White Faction's Flag - ?

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Harri_Webb - designed and presumably made the original and first White Eagle flag as a pageant prop.

The pageant involved references to a medieval poem in which a prophecy will be fulfilled when The White Eagle re-appears over Eryri.

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Snowdonia - the last stronghold of The Welsh in The North when The Norman-French conquered Wales.

Harri Webb gave the pageant's flag as a prop to The Free Wales Army who can be argued to have begun as a Situationist protest group.

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Free_Wales_Army - https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Situationist_International - we talk to them at Cilmeri.

We do a bit of Situationalism - http://repwblic.informe.com/yr-ardystiad-campaign-against-the-treason-felony-act-1848-dt438-20.html

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Giles_Calvert - printed most of the Republican radical literature " at the sign of The Black Spread Eagle "

" The Black Spread Eagle " was painted on his shop's white sign - https://www.calverts.coop/at-the-sign-of-the-black-spread-eagle/

" The Black Spread Eagle " was the arms of The Holy Roman Empire and was used to refer to The Commonwealth in England and Wales.

" The Eagle " on Harri Webb's flag was fussy and complicated : The Free Wales Army reduced it to the easily depicted geometric symbol.

The " Mil " symbol is depicted on " Y Repwblic " using the three ASCII symbols " >|< " and we also depict our " Civ " symbol using " /|\ "

The " >|< " symbol excites many imaginations - people denote their sympathies by rendering it in different colours other that the FWA's

The " /|\ " symbol excites many imaginations and it has been established as a symbol for over two hundred years in different colours.

" The Republicans in The Parade " have been dressed in mourning for over two hundred years - " Black + White >|< " is not Neo-Nazi !

" Neo-Nazis " have been showing up at Republican parades displaying " Black + White >|< " apparently believing The FWA to be The SS.

" Civ " started warning " Mil " that they were placing us all at risk by tolerating this misuse of " Black + White >|< " over a decade ago.

If you have the opportunities please explain this present situation to The People in The USA and The World - " >|< " is not " terrorist."

Yours Sincerely,

David B. Lawrence = Dai Saw = dai repwblic
