It's strange that there was no mention of the Violence Initiative, which was almost certainly the greatest public controversy of his career... AnonMoos (talk) 05:06, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"grossly misinterpreted by the press"

[edit]

Unfortunately, due to a long sad history of incidents in the United States, any juxtaposition between Black people and bananas, monkeys, apes, watermelon etc. can be a matter of extreme sensitivity. The press did not "misinterpret" that Goodwin went on at length about a primate analogy in a way that many Blacks would find offensive (see quote at Violence Initiative). Goodwin may not have had any malicious intent, but if he had no idea about the minefields he needed to avoid stepping into, then he may not have been the best person to deal with the issue of "inner city youths" in the first place... I agree, and after reading Harriet A Washington's Medical Apartheid, I've adjusted this entry to include his quote and to remove the "similar conditions" wording, obviously wrong, and also the effect that this derailed his ambitions, both of which deflect from the real impact of his statement. 130.238.182.198 (talk) 13:07, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
