Section on tobacco lobbying removed
[edit]I removed the section on tobacco lobbying because I'm unconvinced that it is relevant for an encyclopedic biography of Lord Howe. To be more specific:
1. The section was based on two articles, by the same journalist, in the same newspaper, on the same day. I have done a pretty thorough search of the news archives at google, I see no other reputable papers mentioning the incident.
2. Although the newspaper articles couched this event in the language of controversy, it seems entirely unclear what is supposed to be controversial about it. Leaked emails show that when pondering new regulation on cigarette sales in the UK, Lord Howe was in email contact with anti-tobacco campaigners and tobacco company representatives. There is no suggestion, not even a hint, that he did anything illegal or improper, unless one thinks that to even talk to someone you're about to regulate is wrong. If further details emerge that he accepted or asked for payment, or something awful like that, then of course this is likely to become a bigger story and part of his biography. But that a health minister asks for comment on proposed legislation from companies being regulated, and listens to those comments, strikes me as good governance and quite boring and routine. I could be persuaded by additional reliable sources saying that this is somehow a big deal.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:58, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Its a big deal because it breaches the World Health Organisation's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which says governments must be transparent in their dealings with organisations that have links to the tobacco industry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.74.111.71 (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
Does he have ANY qualifications to run a Health Service at all?
[edit]Or indeed, any background in patient safety? Seems a ridiculous appointment. And many of the regulations his dimwits have removed as part of the 'Red Tape Challenge' were actually put in place as the government's 'protective obligations' under Art.2 HRA - absurd and arguably illegal. 79.74.98.80 (talk) 17:37, 5 October 2014 (UTC)pleb79.74.98.80 (talk) 17:37, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
EU Farm subsidies?
[edit]Any idea how much he receives annually?79.74.111.71 (talk) 19:04, 5 October 2014 (UTC)twl79.74.111.71 (talk) 19:04, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
