Etymology Question

[edit]

Does it mean peaceful ruler, or might it mean Free Ruler or something of the like? Frede-rick, rick/ric etc. being ruler, Frede would seem more as a root to Freed or Freedom, wouldn't it?

It is derived from the Old Norse words "fridr", meaning peace and today spelled fred in Scandinavian languages, and "æinrikr", meaning ruler and today spelled Erik, Eirik or similar forms (and is in itself a common Nordic name). So Frederik (or Fredrik, or Frederick etc.) means something like peaceful ruler. Sakkura 23:49, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
