Three generations of Frederic Walker Lincolns

[edit]

It's very clear from the cited work by William Richard Cutter in the footnotes that the FIRST Frederic Walker Lincoln was mayor of Boston, not his son Frederic Walker Lincoln, (Jr.). (I put that appellation in parentheses because there's no indication that the son actually used it.) Furthermore, there's an article on a grandson born in 1898 who apparently went by Frederic Walker Lincoln III! Rontrigger (talk) 02:26, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that there were four generations not three, the third was the father of the mayor. The Mayor was also known as Frederic Walker Lincoln, (Jr.)wmcewenjr That is the name he used as mayor, and his inaugural address is titled 'The Inaugural address of His Honor Fred W. Lincoln, Jr Mayor of the City of Boston, to the City Council, January 3, 1859' The Lincoln of this article Fred the III is clearly in a number of NY Times articles referred to as Jr.

Naming conventions are such that as long as the father Sr is alive the son is Sr, if three generations are alive then there is a III, once the grandfather dies the Jr moves up to Sr and III becomes Jr, it is confusing, especially as it appears that in this case the Lincoln Family had a Fred W for at least 4 generations.wmcewenjr

Upon searching this man's name, it turns out he is actually Frederic Walker Lincoln IV, not III. Death does NOT impact suffixes, contrary to popular belief. His patrilineal great-great-grandfather was Amos Lincoln, a son-in-law of Paul Revere. Amos was the father of the original Frederic, who was either this Frederic's patrilineal great-granduncle or patrilineal great-grandfather. Therefore, there were four men named Frederic Walker Lincoln. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 01:24, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
