First Encounter Between Trapp Family and Fr. Wasner

[edit]

According to this article, "Wasner returned to Salzburg where he met Georg von Trapp. He and Trapp became close friends and from that time on he accompanied the Trapp family as director and conductor on all their concert tours."

This contradicts the account given by Maria von Trapp in her 1949 book. After Georg von Trapp lost his fortune, the family obtained permission to construct a chapel in their home, and they took in boarders. "Professor D." (he is not otherwise identified in her book), became their first boarder, and he "quickly [became] a very dear and wonderful friend." Continuing the story, however, Maria relates that:

"At Easter, 1935, Professor D. had to make a journey, and asked a priest friend to come and say Holy Mass in his stead. Afterwards at breakfast, the young priest, whose name was Father Wasner, said: . . ."

Thus, Fr. Wasner was introduced to the family (albeit indirectly) by "Professor D." and not by Georg von Trapp.
