[edit]Origin of the name "Four Mile Run"
I have severe heartburn when I read "The name Four Mile Run does not derive from its length, but was, in fact, a misreading of an old map. An old flour mill near the Potomac gave the stream the name of "Flour Mill Run", but the map had faded letters.[3]"
I've heard this again and again, but it strikes me as being very unlikely to be true. First, a mill for grinding grain prior to the 20th C. would not have been known as a flour mill, but rather as a grist mill. Second, I have seen maps containing this creek that go back to the 17th century (long before any grist mills would have been constructed on this creek) and I've never seen a label other than "Four Mile Run". Every time I've seen this legend "documented" the documentation points to an earlier undocumented source. If anyone can point to the map that says "Flour Mill Run" I'm happy to back down (and happier to find a map of Arlington/Alexandria I've never seen), but until then I am very unhappy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apikoros (talk • contribs) 23:22, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
