Much of this article was lifted directly from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, and hence used the present tense to describe the situation back then. There are however some newer paragraphs interspersed. I've tried to change the tenses and add some appropriate warnings, but obviously the whole thing needs to be brought up to date.
