Evacuation a bit POV

[edit]

The section "Destruction of Opitsaht" doesn't say much about the increasingly sour relations between Wickanninish and Gray; he didn't just leave, he was effectively driven out. I'm not sure but I think this is in Scholefield in Howay, I'll try and find it; as it's told right now it's a bit of a whitewash, as if it were the Indians and that Hawaiian turncoat who betrayed him; there's a passage in the Akriggs BC Chronicle quoting I suppose from the log about the shelling which could be quoted here, also....and this was a particular group of the Tla-o-qui-aht, which is a modern agglomeration of numerous peoples, so that's not actually worded right; "Opitsaht" is in fact the name of a people, what their own name for their village is I'm not sure; but they were only one of several peoples now combined under the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations band; Tla-o-qui-aht in its "white" rendering of Clayoquot was used back then but as a grouping it included peoples and villages now extinct.....somewhere out there, though, is their account of what happened, which in the interests of NPOV should be included....Skookum1 (talk) 03:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location

[edit]

@Pfly: By adding the "citation needed" tag are you saying Kendrick Camp in Nootka Sound was the location of Fort Defiance? If so, what are the sources for this idea? DMBanks1 (talk) 00:17, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DMBanks1: I wasn't thinking Gray's Fort Defiance was in Nootka Sound, but Kendrick did fortify a small island in Nootka Sound, not Clayoquot Sound. I think that's why I asked for a source: I thought someone had confused Kendrick's Nootka Sound post (which he called Fort Washington) with Gray's Clayoquot post. But I've since learned that Kendrick apparently made small forts in both sounds, apparently both called Fort Washington confusingly. I admit I am unsure about the details, and it looks like you reworded things so this issue doesn't come up, which seems for the best really! Pfly (talk) 03:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pfly: Yes, I agree the original wording was confusing. Keep up your good work on this region. DMBanks1 (talk) 14:47, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
