I don't have the expertise to edit this page, but as someone who is trying to fill out a 2017 1099 for an independent contractor, a qualified Wikipedia might update the following:

  1. 1. Reference 1 ponts to an IRS site that has the 2018 1099 Form. This is confusing: it's now January, 2017, and I am looking for the needed 2017 Form. I found it here but that is not an IRS site.
  2. 2. Filling out a 1099 should be very simple. Seems that buying a paper form is simple, but filling out a form online is a bit daunting. See this post from Intuit on the special Red Ink that is one gotcha. If you want to fill out the form online via a fillable pdf, one may also run into a scam, according to Ripoff Reports.
  3. 3 Can 1099s be Prepared Electronically?

Says the IRS:

“Information returns may also be filed electronically using the IRS Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system (visit www.IRS.gov/FIRE) or the IRS Affordable Care Act Information Returns (AIR) program (visit www.IRS.gov/AIR)”

Doing this requires 45 Days, so not relevant to 2017:

“The most efficient way to apply to file information returns electronically is to submit the Fill-in Form 4419, Application for Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE), from the FIRE home page. You may also go to Forms and Pubs and select the paper version of Form 4419. Be sure to submit your application at least 45 days prior to the due date of your information returns.”
