It's not Soccer

[edit]

Sorry folks, but the kind of "football" described here would be more like rugby than the "association football" which has hijacked the name today.--MacRusgail (talk) 15:57, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is that claim based on? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.105.164.99 (talk) 15:14, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the your rewording of the text, but putting it in a defunct 'rugby union' category is also as misleading. I've decategorised it from all categories relating to modern sports and left it as Category:Sports teams in Edinburgh --Pretty Green (talk) 17:13, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've replaced this. It seems to be standard practice to include pre-split rugby under RU. --MacRusgail (talk) 17:44, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
'Initially, the club had very few regulations. However, in 1833, Hope created the world’s first known set of football rules, albeit very minimal ones. However, one of the more innovative rules banned the till then common practice of picking up the ball, rugby style. From that point onwards, in Hope’s organisation, kicking the ball became the sole permitted method of propelling it. The Edinburgh club’s 1833 rules therefore represent the first steps away from what had been the ancestor of both soccer and rugby to something that began to more closely resemble an embryonic form of soccer.' Biased?

[edit]

"a form of football that did not resemble association football.[1] Nevertheless, the organisation can claim to be the earliest recorded club playing football of any kind" This does not read like the kind of sentence you expect on Wikipedia, and what sources support that it "did not resemble association football"? Certainly not the one given
