Origin of the name

They are so named because the first floats were decorated barges on the River Thames for the Lord Mayor's Show.

Citation_needed, I say! The same goes for the claim in Lord_Mayor's_Show.
Just as likely (as long as there is no citation), they are so named because they were originally built over farm carts with low loadbeds, ie Float_(horse-drawn). Modern day parade floats are similarly built over low-bed trailers.
