Pencilmation
[edit]Pencilmation should not redirect here. Pencilmation is a separate YouTube channel, recognised as the third most viewed creator channel on the platform, with 2.8 billion clicks. Featured on YouTube Rewind [1]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legobiscuits (talk • contribs) 18:44, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
I don't know
[edit]I don't know why this used to redirect to Limited animation - I don't see any evidence for this as a synonym. I've redirected to Internet cartoon since all the pages linking here used it in that sense. —Quarl (talk) 2006-01-20 05:31Z
- The comment above was before I renamed back to Flash cartoon, as this name has the most Google hits. This is a new article on a notable subject (just look at the number of articles on specific Flash cartoons). —Quarl (talk) 2006-02-03 05:04Z
OOO! I use flash and am currently making a "MINI SHOW" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ko34 (talk • contribs) .
Least helpful entry on Wikipedia?
[edit]Could be.
The entire article is littered with weasely adjectives and qualifiers, and there is a key fallacy in the premise that "Flash animation" rightly refers to anything that is not presented via the Flash renderer (swf) -- regardless of what software is used for production. A cartoon-style film produced using more elabourate tools (be it Toon Boom Studio, Anime Studio, or even some 3D program using a cel shading renderer) and output to video for web distribution (DivX, windows streaming video, etc.) should not be lumped together with the real-time rendered vector Flash animations.
Real-time vector rendering method should probably be isolated in this regard (is there any other format for this on the web besides Flash?), traditional video formats converted to the "Flash Video" format (flv) may qualify in a very broad argument. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.111.226.32 (talk) 20:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Some of the emotional, sympathetic-antithetical content is equally specious. It's as if you have patchworks of pro-con Flash editors (and I suspect the hand of the Apple people in some passages). anyway, that is my rational for a minor structural change I am making now to one paragraph. 74.166.196.248 (talk) 13:58, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Restructured this rather politicized and editorialized paragraph: "Some hallmarks of poorly-produced Flash animation are jerky natural movements (seen in walk-cycles and gestures), auto-tweened character movements, lip-sync without interpolation, and abrupt changes from front to profile view. Although Flash is able to integrate bitmaps and other raster-based art, as well as video, most Flash films are created using only vector-based drawings which often result in a somewhat clean graphic appearance."
to a more neutral phrasing:
"Flash is able to integrate bitmaps and other raster-based art, as well as video, most Flash films are created using only vector-based drawings which often result in a somewhat clean graphic appearance. Some hallmarks of poorly-produced Flash animation are jerky natural movements (seen in walk-cycles and gestures), auto-tweened character movements, lip-sync without interpolation, and abrupt changes from front to profile view."
My reasoning is that wonking the reader in the second paragraph with select examples of substandard Flash animations, as if they define the quality of Flash overall, is weasely. Better to give an example of what Flash does--vector graphics, etc.--and then followup with what can be expected in poor quality animations. The former paragraph seemed worded to give the impression that flash animations are crap, when they may or may not be, depending on the sophistication and skill of the animator.giggle 14:11, 17 May 2011 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregory.george.lewis (talk • contribs)
Good and Bad
[edit]Perhaps a small entry on the good and bad of using Flash on a web page? Flash is beginning to fall out of favor since it's been discovered as a great way to track users and gain personal info about them. Search engines can't read anything in them. I'm sure a rookie web designer or small business owner would like to know that spiffy flash site they purchased from a template site will be indexed as a blank site by the SE's etc. . . . texxs (talk) 12:27, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Macromedia Flash only?
[edit]Is it true that flash comics can be created only with Macromedia Flash? The article seems to implly that multiple times. Many programs export to flash, take Apple's Keynote for example, it's fairly easy to make a limited cartoon using that. Besides, there's the ming library that allows creating flash movies using php or perl scripts. --Lorn 23:07, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- No, other programs, such as Toon Boom Studio, can be used to create Flash animation as well, often better (or in a more user-friendly way) than Flash itself can.
- I added three of those programs I know (and have used). Slowtiger
Rename to Flash animation
[edit]Not all Flash animations are cartoons, so I propose that this article be renamed "Flash animation" instead. Polls are evil and all of that, but I would like some feedback regarding this idea. Thoughts? RFerreira 05:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Not all rectangles are squares, therefore square should be renamed rectangle? There are better ways to express your sentiment. —Quarl (talk) 2006-10-16 12:20Z
- Sorry, I'm not really sure what you meant by the comment..? In any event, thank you Freakofnurture for the renaming. RFerreira 00:35, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Removed the tag after some improvements (I think). Someone in the know should add more famous examples besides Krikfalusi, like "Happy Tree Friends" and such. Maybe as a list. The picture isn't really informative, if I find time, I'll try a more typical one. Slowtiger
I can help with adding more examples (this is aaron from coldhardflash.com). I've spent the better part of the last 3 years cataloging the character animation portion of Flash animation on my site. I'm going to throw in JibJab's stuff and Homestar Runner. I could go on and on, but this article covers most of the big shows. Aaron Simpson 05:00, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Feature films
[edit]I'd like to start a section or subsection about the use of Flash to create feature films. A few have been released, and more are on the way, among them a few interesting independent productions. Here are the ones that I've found:
- Mucha Lucha - Heart of Lucha (USA, 2004)
- Mucha Lucha - The Return of El Malifico (USA - 2005)
- Golden Blaze (USA, 2005)
- Queer Duck: The Movie (USA, 2006)
- Romeo & Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss (USA, 2006)
- Alice's Birthday (Russia, 2007) (screenshots)
- Jacked: Alien vs. the Bodies (Russia, 2007)
- Minushi (Canada, 2007)
- Nim's Journey (Sweden, 20??)
- Frogman (Japan, 2007)
- Christmas Is Here Again (USA, 2007?)
- Los Campeones de la Lucha - Australia (2007?)
- The Chosen One (USA,2007)
- Sita Sings the Blues (USA, 2008?)
The Fairly OddParents films (I'm not sure that they're flash-animated, but the show is so I'm assuming that they are as well) were only released on TV, and a few are on DVD. The Russian films will be getting theatrical releases. "Sealed with a Kiss" is all animated by one person and is currently in theatres (touring around the US) - apparently the creator used Moho, not just Flash (not what it is really as I've never used Moho). "Minushi" is an independent production (all animated by one person) and may play in a few film festivals - the creator isn't sure right now and is talking with distributors. "Nim's Journey" is a long-term independent project that is quite far from being completed.
Does anybody know of any more films? I'd like to make sure that all the information is there before the section is added. Esn 00:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
--"Lil' Pimp" (USA, produced 2002, released 2005) was a Flash animated feature (I've updated the main article with a reference to it, although you may want to move it into the new section when it's complete), and also Cartoon Network's recently produced TV feature "Re-Animated" was produced at Renegade Animation using Flash, although it combines it with live action. Atomicon 21:47, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Fairly OddParents isn't animated in Flash, and I've removed those from the list above. I then added in several others - not all of which had theatrical release, but are feature-length Flash projects. Aaron Simpson 05:00, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Is it really that hard?
[edit]I have never ever read a good explanation on what Flash Animation actually is. How are the animation created? With a mouse, with a stylus and a graphic tablet or another way? What kind of hardware is used? Is flash the main definition on animation created directly on the screen? If not, what is the common name on this animation genre? How many genres can it be divided into? What is the main difference between Flash and similar stuff? Describing the program and in what way the animation can be used, is like talking about the cameras and how to use traditional cel animation, but not mention the animation techniques with a single word. 217.68.114.116 13:30, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Mucha Lucha?
[edit]The studio that did the early 90s animated series "the Critic" claim they were the first series to use flash before it was even well known.
That makes no sense. There were no Flash comics in the early '90s, because Flash didn't even exist till December 1996, after Macromedia had acquired the Futuresplash Animator technology and released it as Flash 1.0. Zebulonn (talk) 20:33, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Where do you download the software?
[edit]Where do you download the software? I'd like to make a flash animation but does anybody know where I can get the software? Good friend100 17:37, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
you must buy it or download a free 30-day trial version from http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/

KoolMoves as a viable option to other flash software
[edit]Regardless who, when, why or how anyone references KoolMoves in the Flash Animation wiki entry, someone removes it and marks it "RV advertising". I am completely unaffiliated with KoolMoves short of the fact that I am an end user of the product and it is a wonderful, viable option to the other software listed in the wiki. Why on earth do you people keep removing the link? Yes, it is advertising the product, just as all the other links to other options are advertising thier products. How is it remotely fair to remove one option but not the others? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.60.32.191 (talk) 16:15, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
FutureSplash forerunner of Macromedia Flash
[edit]Just a note about Macromedia developing Flash. Macromedia bought the program from a small group of developers who had marketed the software as "FutureSplash" with the file extension .spl. I have some animations with that file extension I created in 1996 and they can still play in the Flash player. There was no coding (actionscript), but the basic layout is still the same: vector drawing, layers, scenes, tweens (both motion and shape). The animations I did was a ballerina performing allegro combinations. I used this software for over a year before Macromedia acquired it. Its purpose was to provide animated content with a very small file size at a time when the most common connection to the Internet was dial-up with a 28.8 or 56k modem. The small file size was possible because of vector art capability as opposed to raster (bitmap) and the revolutionary player engine design. Though Macromedia developed the application far above the simple original program, the basic form is still the same. I have consistently kept up with the Flash authoring software through all the versions until the Adobe buyout of Macromedia. FutureSplash should be noted in the development of Flash; its vector program, player engine, and tweening animations are still the base for Flash. [edit]does anybody know how i can animate a word in flash so that the word looks as though it has been spray painted character by character? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.195.86.40 (talk) 06:43, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but you could probably just draw the words instead. Kausill 12:53, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Moving project lists to a new article
