Flags of Europe#Disputed and unrecognised states

Is it really necessary to include the flags of Sealand and Seborga? They are micronations, in other words joke states that no one takes seriously (it's also odd that not all other micronations in Europe are included). I also think that the flag of the Republika Srpska is unnecessary as it is a federal unit of Bosnia and Herzegovina. If we include that, then we should include all sixteen States of Germany. Finally, I'm not too sure about the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria; they have no control over Chechnya, so you can hardly call it an unrecognized state.--Rudjek 21:36, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I support the removal of Republika Srpska as it is a recognized (and we all hope it stays recognized) Serbian state within Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is not in the same position as the other ones. Seborga is just a joke IMO, and Sealand should stay, it is truly an unrecognized state.Velimir85 01:36, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Sealand's flag should stay for a number of reasons:

• Sealand is in Europe so its flag is a flag of Europe.
• It is a national flag used in Europe.
• According to Principality of Sealand, "Sealand's claims to sovereignty and legitimacy are not recognised by any country" so the flag should be included in the disputed/unrecognised section of this article.
• The Government of Sealand describes here how the Principality of Sealand is a nation.

Based on the above reasons, the flag of Sealand should stay in this article. Onecanadasquarebishopsgate 19:53, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Criterion for sorting flags

Is there any good explanation to why flags are sorted according to EU membership? All other continent's flag pages are sorted by geographic regions, which in my opinion is far more intuitive than affiliation with an international political organization. I'm inclined to change this unless anyone objects (with a good reason to keep things the way they are now). --Denvesletigeren 15:40, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Catalonia is not an independant state

The flag of Catalonia has been moved to "Dependencies and autonomous regions of European Union members in Europe" as it is an autonomous region of Spain, an EU member. Onecanadasquarebishopsgate 19:53, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

NATO flag

I note that Image:Flag of NATO.svg is a non-free image and does not have a fair-use rationale for this article. Therefore, either a rationale needs to be added, or the image pulled from this article. Corsica

Should Corsica be added to the 'dependencies & autonomous_regions' category? It's the only territorial collectivity in France, which I'd be inclined to mean it's the French government's way of referring to autonomy. See also subdivisions of France for more. Rubbish "dependencis and autonomous regions" section

IMO, it is incorrect to lump regions of federal/pseudo-federal states like Spain with dependencies like Gibraltar.

This section needs a massive editting. I propose a "Flags of European regions" section below the flag of European states and above a revampled "Flags of European Dependencies"

Anyone else have an opinion?

I made a separate category for "first order divisions." I think this is more appropriate. The status of, for example, the Aland Islands with Finland is hardly comparable with that of Aragon in Spain.

I think that someone should add the flags of German and Austrian states and Italian Regions to make this new section more complete, as it is mostly a listing of first order divisions of Spain, the UK, and Italy.

Luis Lopez: I moved the flags of Madeira, Azores and The Canary Islands to the Flags of European sub-divisions as those are full states within their nations and not dependencies or territories. I think there is a tendency from English-speaking editors to consider all islands outside the realm of Europe "territories" as it is a common occurrence in U.S. and Britain. Northern Ireland

The flag displayed as that of Northern Ireland is not Northern Ireland's flag. As Northern Ireland has no official flag - see: Flag of Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland flags issue - should the country have an entry on this article at all? The options are:

• 1: Remove the entry for Northern Ireland;
• 2: Retain the Northern Ireland entry, but remove the flag and note that Northern Ireland has no official flag;
• 3: Show both the (UK's) Union flag and the (Irish) Tricolour under Northern Ireland, as equally representative of the country.

Chaotic dates

In order to avoid the lack of rigour about dates (for instance, current flag of Spain obviously is legal in its actual form from 1978, not at all 1927, in despite of any other considerations), I suggest to write the "legal date" only, it is, the date when the flag was legally adopted in its current form. Kosovo vs. Northern Cyprus and others

The map in the article currently shows the flag of Kosovo, but does not show those of Northern Cyprus, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. All those "countries" are partly recognized, ie. they are recognized as independent by some nations, and not by others. None of those is recognized as independent by the majority of UN members, and none of them is a member of the UN. So, what is the point of including Kosovo, and not including others? What makes Kosovo more important than Norther Cyprus? I propose we remove the flag of Kosovo from the map until the consensus is reached. Vanjagenije (talk) 11:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Serbia?

It is well-known like how the is the same as le, la or les in French or that water is wet. Anyone want to do the gruntwork of finding an article for it though? Date for date section

What is the criteria for the date added? An example the flag of Wales shows 9 century and the official adoptation was 1959, the flag of Ireland's dates are out of sync with this, adopted 1919 yet the date is 1922, even though the flag is from 19 century origin. If some one could clear this up for me thanks.Murry1975 (talk) 18:34, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Italian regions?

Many Italian regions have official flags (albeit some —i.e. Marche— pretty lame), not only the ones with statuto speciale. I decided to include those which are sanctioned by a regional law in the section about European regions.--Carnby (talk) 15:15, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Nordic council

They seem to have a new version (since at least 2006) of the flag:

A new version of the flag was introduced in 2016. See the final page in the design manual for the Nordic Cooperation. Albania consistency

The flag of Albania, adopted in April 1912, so the rest of the entry matches that. It's not difficult. That the flag has a history is covered in the rest of the text, but it doesn't change that the current flag was adopted in 1912. FDW777 (talk) 22:19, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
