Discuss: Could firefly be the first social networking site? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mhaderman (talk • contribs) 21:18, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Suggestion: this article should suggest alternative systems that fill the void left when Firefly was shut down (i.e. I rate some music, and get recommendations of other music that I'd probably like). I wouldn't consider Amazon's "people who bought this also bought..." comparable; it's so simplistic by comparison to Firefly. Paul Heckbert 22:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Firefly was wonderfully sophisticated. It was the first social networking site. CDNow was affiliated with them, as were several other CD/DVD stores, which allowed some level of price comparison shopping pre-dating Nextag and Pricegrabber. It was an amazing community, but Microsoft destroyed it, like they've done with many others (like Pacific Microsonics). Amazon then acquired CDNow, which had the largest database compiled of music industry professionals in the world (imagine finding every release a particular mastering engineer had ever done)... that got abandoned. Like Politics.com, CDNow and Firefly are lost to history and mostly forgotten. But these Internet One success stories were in many ways superior to what's available now, not to mention there would be no Myspace or Facebook if they hadn't paved the way. In fact, dare I say there would be no reason for Myspace, Facebook, Bebo, or the Amazon review system if Firefly was still around. Amazon, after all, just inherited the CDNow customers and had to bribe them with coupons and free shipping for over a year after the merger to keep angry people from going somewhere else. Vastly inferior. I was an original member of all three and now all the content is essentially vapor. -Reticuli —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.178.139.178 (talk) 19:03, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
