The court of Ilya's father never find out the Firebird is the culprit. Ilya pretends he is a fool long before the princess comes into the picture.

Ivan is Tsar not a Boyar. In fact if I recall correctly there are Boyars reporting to him. In this setting the difference between Tsar and say clan chief wasn't much and in the book there was a person called the Great Tsar who was of a much higher rank than Ivan which maybe why people are confused but Ivan was a Tsar.
