Criteria for timeline inclusion[edit]
Should Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn really be in the timeline? I understand that it is an extensive revision of the game, but there have been many of these, such as the FFIII 3D version, FFIV Complete Edition, FFVII Remake and FFXII Zodiac Age to name only a few. Not to mention that the A Realm Reborn subtitle has been dropped since and the name has reverted back to Final Fantasy XIV. I don't think any reason for including A Realm Reborn can be found that doesn't also apply to versions of the other games.
I think the simplest timeline would include only the basic titles. Ozdarka (talk) 17:27, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- It absolutely should be, and differs from all those other examples. ARR was not simply a "revision" or a "remake" or a "remaster". This is a heavily documented case where the original game flopped so hard in critical and player reviews that they literally stopped and redeveloped the entire game, nearly from scratch. The original was frozen and subsequently shutdown and replaced by ARR. It's not at all the same as remakes/remasters, and it was not an "update" to the original game but an outright replacement that ran entirely separate from the start. For all intents and purposes, the original game was erased and is not available for purchase or play. That's why AAR is recognized as the primary topic for Final Fantasy XIV while the original is relegated to Final Fantasy XIV (2010 video game). Note also that the "ARR" subtitle has subsequently been dropped and the current game is simply "Final Fantasy XIV" -- ferret (talk) 18:07, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, it is beyond a simple remake or remaster of prior games. (FFVII Remake should be included for the same reasons). --Masem (t) 18:21, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- Surely the 3D versions of FFIII and IV as well. Ozdarka (talk) 11:03, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- Ferret, slightly off topic but I still wish we had a better way to cleanly disambiguate the XIV games in prose. Right now, the best we can do is add the ARR subtitle to the 2013/current version even if it hasn't been called that in a while. Maybe "Final Fantasy XIV Online" per its logo? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 10:52, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- Disambiguate how though? From other FF games or themselves? They were both online. -- ferret (talk) 13:34, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- I think he's more referring to the original game (1.0), and the rebooted version, A Realm Reborn: FINAL FANTASY XIV, if we really needed to differentiate it, we can just call the original FINAL FANTASY XIV and keep the "A Realm Reborn" subtitle for when we are specifying the rebooted version (or the MMO as a whole). I do not thing it'll fit the style guide to call the original game as 1.0 besides a detail here or there. Noilaedi (talk) 19:03, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Capitalizing FINAL FANTASY?[edit]
As far as I can tell, Square-Enix has (at least now) have titled the series as FINAL FANTASY officially and in all their official media. I'll add it as a small extra detail but also I wonder if we should capitalize all the titles given that it seems to be the "correct" way to type it out rather than a stylistic choice on a logo (Like how we type out Final Fantasy VII rather than "Final Fantasy 7". Noilaedi (talk) 19:07, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Noilaedi:, MOS:ALLCAPS wants us to avoid all capitalization when necessary. It's also a common thing that Japanese media with English titles will opt out to use all capitalization. Its happened to Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 21:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

TTRPG[edit]
There is no mention of the new TTRPG of Final Fantasy XIV. 121.112.213.65 (talk) 07:16, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
