Image of Dwayne Johnson

{{Edit semi-protected}} Don't you think the image is a bit shoe-horned in there for the sake of having an image. Johnson is a fan of the show, so what? The caption specifically states that lots of celebrities are. S.G.(GH) ping! 21:45, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, that doesn't seem terribly on-subject. Is there a source in the section specifically mentioning him or something? If not, I'd say yoink it. DP76764 (Talk) 21:51, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
For all we know, there's a contest going on in some wrestling fan forum or something where people are trying to see how many times they can get The Rock's picture to appear on wikipedia. Most Successful Prime Time Animated Series?

That source (which is dubious) only states that is is currently their highest-rated animated series. I think to say it is Fox's most successful is misleading, since the Simpsons, in its 20+ years has been more successful, even if Family Guy is currently rated higher. I think this sentence should be deleted, or at least changed to say that Family Guy is currently the highest-rated animated series on Fox. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.74.160.4 (talk) 17:55, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Once you make enough edits with your account, you will be able to edit protected articles. In the meantime, I have corrected the reference error. Ωphois 05:10, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. I did not know about the different levels of "logged in users" (besides the separation of admins/users/bots, of course). Is there a WP article I can read up on that? Especially how many articles one has to edit to qualify for a "legitimate user". Also, thanks for the ref correction. -- 194.246.123.103 (talk) 21:07, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Format: Cut Away Gags?

They have some heavy use of cut away gags, but the overall format is still that of an animated sit-com, is it not? This doesn't make much sense to me. Besides of which, a cut-away gag is a gag, not an overall format, isn't it? I don't think the format even matters, and it seems superfluous to include it since the show takes other formats as well, even if the cut away gags are the usual way of conducting business. If others could chime in, that'd be great. (edited for specificity) 134.117.251.5 (talk) 04:09, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

I agree, I do not think "cut-away gags" is a format for the show and it should be removed. It's the entire reason why I decided to create a Wikipedia account. If anything the format should be "animated comedy" - the same could be said about Simpsons, American Dad and Cleveland Show. I'm new so I wouldn't make a big change without allowing more people to comment on it, I think a similar-minded and more frequent user should consider removing the category.

Awards section

The last sentence of the "Awards" section makes reference to "this episode" but doesn't state which episode is being referenced. "Brian was awarded the 2009 Stoner of the Year award by High Times due to this episode, marking the first time an animated character received the honor.[133]"

Perhaps the sentence can be rewritten to say "Brian was awarded the 2009 Stoner of the Year award by High Times for episode 420, marking the first time an animated character received the honor. [133]"

Th140 (talk) 04:48, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Family Guy has for a while now grown into more other popular media as references to the show and/or its characters so I've thought that perhaps a "Family Guy in popular culture" page can be in order. Such as for example; with the rising fame and success of the metal band Suicide Silence it can be noted that this band regularly features sounds clips from the series at their live performances before playing certain songs. Also noted; even back in the year 2004, a demo by Suicide Silence with many of the cast members from Family Guy were featured on its cover along with sound clips from the show featured on each one of the song recorded on it, and is thus named the "2004 Family Guy Demo". It's safe to assume that the band must be fans of the series, but the main point is that I'm starting to believe that a page can be made for these popular culture inclusions as several pages of critically acclaimed media or persons usually have one (if not multiple). -- GunMetal Angel 17:39, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Trey and Parker criticism

The Criticism section mentions that Family Guy has been criticised by South Park creators Trey and Parker, but the source reference is an interview where they passingly joke that it hurts when their show is compared to Family Guy. It wouldn't surprise me if Trey and Parker is critical of Family Guy - South Park has poked fun at it repeatedly, as I recall - but the source seems a bit weak. The whole interview and the reference to Family Guy seems to be in a joking tone, and I don't really think it's basis for a mention in the criticism section, not as it's currently phrased anyway. --86.52.76.22 (talk) 10:04, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

Golden Reel Award

The introduction states "It has garnered three Golden Reel Award nominations, winning once." This is not repeated in the Awards section, nor is it backed by a reference, the Golden Reel Award article or its sources. So what's up with it? --YMS (talk) 12:16, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Ah, by incorrectly reproducing the link I see the mistake in the article: It actually is the Golden Reel Award, not the Golden Reel Award (Canada), and it's three wins for six nominations (imdb, which is the official award list for this award). There really isn't anything in the Family Guy Online article that can't be expressed as an issue at the Family Guy article and that the content in that article can easily be explained in the context of this one. So, I propose that we merge Family Guy Online with Family Guy#Video games. Notability also stands as an issue to be discussed. False Citation of New Yorker

According to the article, the New Yorker writer says FG has surpassed the Simpsons. She actually says the opposite:

Currently, the blue ribbon for pull-my-finger comedy goes to Fox’s “Family Guy,” on the basis of both ribaldry and popularity; it’s the most watched show among teen-age boys and college-age men. It can’t be said—not by me, anyway—that “Family Guy” has surpassed “The Simpsons” in terms of quality and reach, but the show is definitely having a moment in the sun.

I couldn't find any support for the claim that it was the best animated show on television. The "blue ribbon" she figuratively awards above is based on "popularity and ribaldry" -- the show is the most popular off-color show, in other words. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.169.117.19 (talk) 00:54, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Similar Shows: American Dad

Hey all, I'm not so certain that American Dad belongs labeled as related show, even though some/many of the production staff are the same. On one hand, they are totally separate characters, stories, and even the writing is different. On the other hand, characters DO sometimes crossover, though generally only for a short time and with little impact on the stories. I personally don't think it belongs listed as similar, though it should certainly be mentioned somewhere.

Matthew Smith 21:21, 9 January 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattsb (talkcontribs)

I'm on the fence, you're right that they do cross over and you're also right that the crossovers have nothing to do with other episodes. CTF83! 04:32, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Crossovers don't make two shows related. In this case, I think it's because they share the same creator and there is some continuity between them (for example, Cleveland Brown's transition from Family Guy to The Cleveland Show).
That's why The Cleveland Show is listed but that has nothing to do with American Dad! being listed CTF83! 05:29, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

I've read the arguments in the archives, where the issue was raised six seperate times; the fact remains that people don't usually look for links in an infobox. The same applies to navigation boxes at the bottom. A link in an infobox does not exclude a link in the main text, nor do you need an episodes section for that. To quote the guidelines:

WP:MOS
  • "The goal is to make the encyclopedia easier and more intuitive to use."
  • "High-value links that are worth pursuing should stand out clearly."
WP:MOSLINK
  • "Generally, a link should appear only once in an article, but links may be repeated in infoboxes, tables, image captions, footnotes, and at the first occurrence after the lead." (WP:REPEATLINK).

If you can't find a suitable place for the link there's always the See also section. If people worry about GA status, it may be useful to point out that the See Also section is not mentioned in the GA criteria. Ssscienccce (talk) 23:15, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Rating

After getting into a discussion about this with regards to American Dad!...quick question regarding "Family Guy holds a TV-PG and TV-14 rating, with the latter being used more often." For film articles we generally don't mention the rating for reasons encapsulated at WP:FILMRATING. Is it standard to include the rating for articles regarding television shows? If so, could I ask how they're considered different in this regard? If not, would anyone object to the removal of the ratings here and at American Dad! for the reasons noted in the link I've provided? Doniago (talk) 20:42, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Why does the article have no mention at all of the aspects of the show that have resulted in a lot of criticism?

It is very suspicious to me that there is no mention whatsoever in the article of the criticism that has been directed at it for jokes that some find offensive. (Most of these are jokes that refer to ethnic stereotypes.)

I am not advocating any point of view about such criticisms. But they are highly relevant to the article and must not be omitted.Daqu (talk) 22:14, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Mention of Reference in Futurama

Just a small point to add, as the page references parodies and mentions in The Simpsons, I've noticed that Family Guy appears at least once in Futurama, in Bender's Big Score as the 'Laugh-a-Day' wall calendar. Therefore I propose adding the paragraph 'Family Guy has been parodied in Futurama, in the direct-to-video film and equivalent broadcast episodes, Futurama: Bender's Big Score, in which a Family Guy 'Laugh-a-Day' calendar is seen on the wall in Fry's present-day apartment.' to the section 'Crossovers with other animated series'.

Critical Reception?

The 'Critical Reception' section as it's currently written is uniformly positive, which I know not to be the case, if only because of the 'Criticism and Controversy' section just below it. Also, the opinions of individual actors is probably not relevant in assessing the critical reception of this show, though a large chunk of the 'Critical Reception' category is given over to that. I would suggest the general criticism part of 'Criticism and Controversy' be moved into 'Critical Reception' with the section below left to specific controversy. It would also be good to get some critical voices that are neither absolutely singing the shows praises nor calling for it to be taken off the air -- I know they're out there, and I would suspect they form the mainstream of this show's critical reception. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.165.8.63 (talk) 03:24, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Plasticity in size of town/city

It might be pointed out that the size of the setting varies greatly depending upon convenience to the story. The Simpsons did this as well. Obviously it is a skyline based on Providence, and takes after an even smaller town in Rhode Island, but in some episodes it is made out to be a much larger city, with a dense urban loop, such as in the chicken fight where they enter a subway station modeled after New York City, then the fight continues above ground amidst a large grid of tower blocks. Also when Meg does a bird call and Big Bird shows up, he says it's hell to get across town at that time of day, and that he "...take[s] the subway just like everyone else". More often it has the cliches of a much smaller or at most medium sized mainly suburban American city with typical mostly white suburbs, like the city Seth has mentioned for inspiration. I don't think this is exactly uncommon in television series, but more to the point, have any reliable sources discussed it? DonIago (talk) 04:52, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Misleading image in quick preview

I was looking at Cluedo#Variants where it lists "Clue: Family Guy Collector's Edition". When I hover the Family Guy link (hover here), the image of Providence skyline is shown instead of the "Griffin Family" picture or "Family Guy" logo. Is there a way to change which picture is used in Page preview? TWiStErRob (talk) 10:17, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Resolution - now might be 1080p (been 720 since 2010)

This YouTube vid by "Animation on Fox" from a new Family Guy episode is in what looks like native 1080p. Stewie Finds Out That Brian Is A Christmas Office Party Creep | Season 15 Ep. 9 | FAMILY GUY This would not be surprising since it's a graphically-simple cartoon. Family Guy was not created by Seth McFarlane. It was created by me, Emmanuel Alexander Teijeiro under the agreement that I would be paid for it's sale to Seth, which as of yet has never occurred.

I can be contacted in regard to this matter by whoever it is that has my account at my home phone, 765-329-5057.

The last person who informed me that they had my account was Kevin Reilly who formerly worked here at Fox before moving to tbs, where I have recently made an effort to reach him by phone through a local financial planner and business lawyer, but was told by his office assistant that since Fox owns Family Guy, you're the ones I have to talk to about it.

This sounds like nonsense to me, but if this is the case, you can reach me at the above posted home phone number.

Thanks. Lemonlime3417 (talk) 14:22, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Potential NPOV Violation

I think this is one of those articles that reads as if it has been carefully structured and written by proponents of the eponymous show to paint it in a more positive light than can be backed up by reality. Family Guy is much more famous for lack of originality, poor writing, and being critically panned than it is for winning awards, stirring up controversy of any meaning or consequence, etc. The article used to reflect that. What do we do when we suspect that WP:NPOV is being systematically violated? Harlequence (talk) 15:46, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
