Copyright problems
[edit]Barring verification of permission (either at the site of publication or via e-mail to the Wikimedia Foundation), we are not able to use or closely paraphrase text from previously published sources. Copyright concerns about this article were raised at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 January 16. Evaluation shows that in spite of efforts to address these, concerns remain. For a few examples, consider the following:
- From the article:
However a crisis erupted at the Ceylon Technical College in December 1949 made University of London reconsider its provisional recognition in view of some serious shortcomings in the college. The degree courses of the technical college were in serious trouble as future recognition appeared to be in doubt. Government responded to the crisis by requesting the University of Ceylon to set up a Faculty of Engineering by 1 July 1950.
- From page 64 of this PDF:
However, in December 1949 a crisis erupted at the Ceylon Technical College when the University of London made known its intention of reconsidering the
provisional recognition in view of some serious shortcomings in the college. This development caused great concern, as continued recognition appeared to be in doubt. The government responded to the crisis by requesting the University of Ceylon to set up a Faculty of Engineering by 1 July 1950. Ill-prepared though it
was, the University accepted the challenge and with this decision the degree courses at the Ceylon Technical College were wound up.
- From the article:
The entire project was a plan of the staff of the Faculty and the University architects without any significant expatriate expertise. All the buildings and other facilities were designed for quick and easy access, reserving ample provision for future expansion. It was after the project was completed in 1964, the move from Colombo took place. The entire facility had a floor area of about 18,500 square meters. An area of 5,400 square metres have been added since then.

- From the article:
104 students graduated in the period 1942-50 when the College was linked with the University of London. On the basis of these figures the intake of freshmen to the Faculty in 1950 was fixed at 25. After being steadily increased over the years, the figure reaching 150 in 1964, by the year which move to Peradeniya took place.

In addition to these particularly problematic passages, other content follows very closely on that source. I'm afraid that this constitutes an unusable derivative work.
While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. So that it will not constitute a derivative work, this material should be completely rewritten in the temporary space that is now linked from the article's front. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".
Alternatively, if the material can be verified to be public domain or permission is provided, we can use the original text with proper attribution.
Please let me know if you have questions about this. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:54, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
