Naming
[edit]@User:Alansohn-- Just curious if you had any concept of the best way to do neighborhood titling. I see that seemingly all New Jersey articles use Neighborhood, New Jersey, but it doesn't make sense to me to title neighborhoods that way. It would make much more sense, imo to do "Neighborhood, City", if we're going to do any disambiguation. In my experience, epople don't think of neighborhoods in the context of the state they're in, but the larger geographical entity. But I'm more interested in getting some consistency in the titling than what it ends up being. The most recent discussion on the MOS talk I had found was from 2009, where there seemed to be little favor for doing "Neighborhood, State", which is why I had moved the article but obviously that's quite a long time ago and not particularly relevant today. Is the standard practice now to do that? Or is it just when the city itself isn't well-known? Or something else? Eddie891 Talk Work 21:42, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- (PS: Coming from trying to figure out Category:Neighborhoods in Syracuse, New York, where there is no agreement between "Neighborhood, Syracuse" and "Neighborhood, Syracuse, New York" Eddie891 Talk Work 21:46, 21 November 2023 (UTC))
- Eddie891, there are 564 municipalities in the state and well over a thousand unincorporated places, which would include neighborhoods. The broad consensus statewide has been to use the "Place Name, New Jersey" format for all places, incorporated or not, unless disambiguation is needed. So there is only one Sayreville, New Jersey, but there are many places named Washington Township, New Jersey, which is why the articles listed there are all disambiguated with county. There is the place Long Valley, New Jersey, which is in Washington Township, Morris County, New Jersey, and I'd be horrified to have to name it Long Valley, Washington Township, Morris County, New Jersey, if the format was to use the Place Name followed by the full title of the parent municipality. The system seems to work well by minimizing the size of article titles, as there are few overlaps. Pennsylvania seems to have more duplication of place names and seems to more frequently disambiguate titles, but I've done no detailed analysis of the policy used there. - Hm, OK yeah that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation, @Alansohn! Eddie891 Talk Work 22:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
