Name

[edit]

His website says that he changed his name when he became a citizen. Any source for this "wrongly entered". It sounds a bit unlikely to me - it's not like every other comic creator worked under their legal name, is it ? (Stanley Lieber anyone ?) -- Beardo 03:48, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Death?

[edit]

Anyone can create a Facebook page and post anything they want on it, and there's precedent for people creating Facebook and Twitter pages under well-known people's names — that's why Twitter now has a "Verify" option. The fact that Chan's official site, http://www.erniechan.com/ , says nothing about his passing should be of concern. Also the fact that, so far, I haven't found any reliable journalistic source mentioning his death. Going back in to look some more. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:28, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing under Ernie Chan or Ernie Chua in the Oakland Tribune nor at http://www.topix.com/oakland. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:42, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's also no mention of him at the website of Chapel of the Chimes, which the Facebook page claimed is where the viewing will be. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:45, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Finally, there's an appreciation of him at Comic Book Resources, but it doesn't give any details and the writer doesn't say how he heard the claim; it may have been from that same unverified Facebook page.
I know the odds favor that the page is real, but all the evidence I've listed above indicates that we can't say 100 percent, concretely, absolutely for sure. No responsible newspaper would run an obit based on nothing but a Facebook claim. And an encyclopedia should not have lower standards than a newspaper. If this claim is true, a reliable journalistic source will report it. Until then, we should proceed with caution and care; we all know that on the Internet, people have been reported to have died when they were still alive — Jon Bon Jovi fairly recently, in fact. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:55, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Digital Spy and GMA News, which are both professional news sites, have since run items on Chan's death, with the latter confirming through a family member. The Bleeding Cool blog doesn't add anything to what these news sites report, so I'm removing it as redundant. My compliments to my fellow editors who waited for journalistic confirmation; that showed the care and meticulousness an encyclopedia needs. Bravo! --Tenebrae (talk) 10:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
