"mostly on Liebold's initiative"

[edit]

"On March 31, 1920, Pipp resigned as editor, in protest over the increasingly antisemitic editorial line of the newspaper:[24] starting in the early months of 1919, the Independent had indeed begun publishing articles condemning the 'noxious influence of the Jews,' mostly on Liebold's initiative."

This is cited to Baldwin p85. Does Baldwin state this specifically? I dont have access to the book, but I did just read a 4-page review/summary of it, and Liebold's name is not mentioned.

...Ford ran on the Democratic ticket for United States Senator from Michigan in 1918 and was defeated; he allegedly blamed his defeat on the influence of "Wall Street" and "a gang of Jews." The following year he purchased the Dearborn Independent and hoped to use the newspaper as a vehicle for his views. A consultant recommended that the newspaper could be spruced up by sensationalism. Ford focused his attention on the Jews; he and one of his editors thought an "educational" series on Jews might work well (p. 97).

Presumably "one of his editors" is Liebold?

Could the high;ighted words be removed or altered? zzz (talk) 18:33, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, "one of his editors" is Liebold. The "consultant" is Joseph Jefferson O'Neill, former journalist for the New York World. According to Baldwin (p85) Liebold was responsible for the publication in the April 12, 1919 issue of the Independent of "The Bolshevik Menace to Russia," an antisemitic article written by Boris Brasol, and one month later published another similar article written by himself. That's why I wrote "mostly on Liebold's initiative." Markhole (talk) 18:56, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply. I changed "Liebold contributed to the diffusion of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," to "The Independent contributed...", I hope you approve. zzz (talk) 19:05, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I approve, thank you. Markhole (talk) 19:26, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
