First mayor

[edit]

"The indictment makes Mr. Adams the first sitting mayor of New York City to be charged with a federal crime." - NYT @Symphony Regalia Andre🚐 05:04, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Right below the fold the article clarifies that with will be the first mayor in modern New York City history to be charged while in office. The sub-headline appears to be somewhat "click-bait" that gets further clarified in the article text.
Former NYC mayor A. Oakey Hall was charged while in office (and William O'Dwyer was implicated in a large corruption scandal). Symphony Regalia (talk) 05:15, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, neither of our articles have that information sourced, though, do you have one handy? Also the NYT itself contains the statement in the body, and not just the headline, Although he will become the first sitting mayor to be criminally charged... the article says Dwyer resigned, maybe before he was charged? And it doesn't mention Oakey Hall. Also, I ctrl+f modern in the article and the only occurrence was Mayor William O’Dwyer, the only modern mayor aside from Mr. Adams to have served as a police officer, resigned months into his second term amid what was described in his obituary as “the biggest police scandal in the city’s history.” Andre🚐 05:19, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mayor Eric Adams has become the second sitting mayor of this city to be indicted, and the first since the consolidation of the five boroughs in 1898 made New York City what it is today. He is also the first to face federal charges. [emphasis mine] [1] Andre🚐 05:27, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quotes. A few sources on A. Oakey Hall:
Who was A. Oakey Hall, the only other sitting NYC mayor to face criminal charges?
Also Washington Post[2].
Given that it appears to be contradicted in other reliable sourcing I've opted to treat it as a potential BLP violation as per:

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a tabloid: it is not Wikipedia's job to be sensationalist, or to be the primary vehicle for the spread of titillating claims about people's lives; the possibility of harm to living subjects must always be considered when exercising editorial judgment

and

Biographies of living persons ("BLPs") must be written conservatively

Symphony Regalia (talk) 10:15, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a BLP violation per WP:PUBLICFIGURE, and as the NYT source says, Adams is the first to be charged with federal crimes while in office. I also don't agree it shouldn't be in the lead as it's clearly a very significant event in the man's life. Andre🚐 17:15, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:PUBLICFIGURE doesn't relate to claims that are false or claims that are contradicted by various sources. WP:BLP encourages avoiding sensationalism and erring towards being conservative in these situations.
"First mayor charged" is contradicted by enough reliable sources to cross the BLP threshold. "First mayor charged with federal crimes" is more specific, and might be uncontested.
As for weight that's a different matter entirely. It certainly has weight for the section on his tenure as mayor. The lede is more questionable given that a number of the charges may very well be dismissed (this happens a lot), and that he hasn't been convicted of any of them. A. Oakey Hall's charges and William O'Dwyer's implication in a major corruption scandal not being in the respective ledes are examples. Symphony Regalia (talk) 09:06, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Federal" was included in my first revert. Andre🚐 09:07, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
