there is nothing but a very brief corporate sounding blurb about the company's plans for expansion. no history 2601:19B:0:EF40:3007:BDA4:1099:C1A3 (talk) 13:55, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of Name

[edit]

This entry is referenced in a recent New York magazine article, wich notes that the "Wikipedia page describes the titular Erewhon of the 1872 novel as a 'utopia in which individuals are responsible for their own health,' but this is not what even a casual reader would take from the text." See https://www.thecut.com/article/erewhon-smoothie-boston-los-angeles-history.html I'm adding the context that in the satirical novel, "people are prosecuted not for ethical breaches but for the crime of being ill". Good eye, I just stumbled on this (funnily, the following December from Not Sure), and find the Origin of Name a strange part of the article.
The 'justification/explanation' of the name being related to the book seems off to me. This The Cut Article you linked seems like the best 'justification":
"They would call it Erewhon, an anagram of Nowhere, after Samuel Butler’s satirical novel of the same name, one of Ohsawa’s favorite books." From: https://www.thecut.com/article/erewhon-smoothie-boston-los-angeles-history.html
I think Erewhon being one of Ohsawa's favorite books is plenty enough justification for the name. Currently, it reads like the name was chosen as if the book alludes to eating organic food = preventing sickness (ignoring the criminal aspect), seems mischaracterizing or not properly sourced.
Currently, this wikipedia article cites some (imo possibly AI generated) SEO content copy that argues:
"Erewhon as a name was popularized by an 1872 novel written by Samuel Butler. In this piece of literature, it represents a utopia where people take charge of their own well-being. Thus, the store promotes a healthy lifestyle by making quality food available to all. [...] " without a source itself,

First off, saying that the title of the book was "popularizing" the name seems quite odd, and it's a stretch to use this as this wikipedia article's citation for "prosecuted for the crime of being ill," since it isn't alluded to here at all, it simply argues (I'd say, erroneously again), that the book is about "people tak[ing] charge of their own well-being."
Within the Ereowhon wikipedia article itself, it states:
"For example, according to Erewhonian law, offenders are treated as if they were ill, whereas ill people are looked upon as criminals," which is as simplified and close as you can get to the actual text, where the explanation of this system is basically spelled out at the very beginning of "Chapter X: Current Opinions"
Ultimately, Oxford says it best: "morality is equated with health and good looks," vs "individuals are responsible for their own health and prosecuted for the crime of being ill." (As if this isn't true irl...)
I think we should just adapt the language that Oxford uses, rip out the frontsigns.com 'article', and just leave the justification as "Erewhon was one of Ohsawa's favorite books." Ziasquinn (talk) 16:29, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Erewhon Locations

[edit]

The discussion on Erewhon locations feels disjointed and disorganized. See the below paragraph, which only highlights the Beverly Hills and Pasadena locations. There's no reason why these locations are spotlighted and the others are not.

In August 2022, Erewhon opened their eighth location and first Beverly Hills location in the former Williams-Sonoma space.[1][2] As of 2023, Erewhon ships nationwide to all 50 states, as well as Australia, Canada and the UK.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page). In September 2023, Erewhon opened a location in Pasadena, the first east of Interstate 5.Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page).

I suggest removing mention of these markets (Beverly Hills and Pasadena), as there is a Locations section that lists all of the markets.

I also think it's worth adding the 3 new locations that have been announced in 2025: in Glendale, West Hollywood, and Manhattan Beach. Rhino132 (talk) 17:09, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
