This article survived a discussion on being deleted by being edited into a suitable format. The focus of the article must be on the publicity, not the personality of the dog. The notability is the handler's efforts to promote the dog in order to raise awareness for the charities he is associated with. The article needs to focus on that publicity. The history of the publicity (when and why it started), how it has snowballed, the reach and depth of the publicity, etc. Information about Endal and Allen should only be to provide background to the focus on the publicity. I am disappointed that the article has started to creep back to what it was, despite the comments by people above which reveal that there has been ongoing concern. Would editors please remain on task and not allow this article to become a vanity piece which might kick off another AfD. Regards SilkTork 11:32, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the references which no longer displayed after your nine edits. I intend to edit it again to reflect your reorganisation (the order in which the sections occur, etc.) of the content. — Athaenara 13:56, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article needing updating

[edit]

I've updated his brief bio on List of famous Labradors, but that's just a summary -- more work is needed to bring this one up to date too.

See that article (and especially its footnotes) for omitted information. FT2 (Talk | email) 15:11, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Documentary clarification needed

[edit]

There are sources referring to a "film of a year in Endals life", and also a documentary broadcast in the UK on Sky, March 2009.

Given the amount of coverage, we need to clear up whether these are the same documentary, or two different ones, so we don't say a documentary is in production if it actually is already completed. FT2 (Talk | email) 13:39, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ATMs and PINs

[edit]

There has been some confusion regarding Endal's abilities with an automated teller machine. A look through the history reveals that the ability to punch in Parton's PIN has been added and removed several times over the history of the article. Certainly Endal has accomplished some impressive feats, but as one might guess manual dexterity imposes some limits. A dog simply cannot enter a PIN on standard numeric pad due to the spacing of the buttons, if for no other reason. Indeed, all of the articles that discuss dogs and ATMs (whether in reference to Endal specifically, or more generally to assitance dogs overall) mention that the dogs can enter a card and retrieve a card and money and receipt, but that the owner must side up to the machine and enter the PIN manually. There seems to be some confusion arising from the Chichester Observer article, which at one points states "The wonder-dog stayed faithfully by Allen's side and learnt to perform some incredible tasks for a canine - including punching in Allen's cash-card details..." It seems here that the Chichester reported skimmed some other articles regarding Endal's accomplishments and incorrectly regurgitated them. See, for example, this excerpt from the referenced Telegraph article, "Shoppers may be struggling with today's new chip and pin requirements, but the technology has proved no problem for Endal, a 10-year-old labrador. The dog, belonging to Allen Parton, a disabled Gulf war veteran, has learnt to put a credit card into a chip and pin reader so that Mr Parton does not have to move his wheelchair to insert it. When his owner has typed in the pin number, Endal collects the card in his mouth and returns it to Mr Parton's wallet. Mr Parton, 47, of Clanfield, Hampshire, said yesterday: 'Lots of people are frightened of the new technology - but I say that if a dog can do it, anyone can.'"
