Creighton's view

[edit]

Someone from Embleton pointed out to me that the view given in the Creighton quote is hardly contemporary and of questionable relevance to the village now, being a description of how he found it about 130 years ago. In Creighton's own article, his time in Embleton is described more fully and in a more balanced way; his concern at the morals is balanced by him also saying it was the best ten years of his life. That seems to me to be more the proper place for that discussion, and gives it room to breathe; here it is shoehorned awkwardly into a section which is supposed to be about "Religious sites", not about what one incumbent at one religious site thought about the population at one time. I'm quite tempted to remove the whole Creighton's-view thing, and resolve instead to add more content of contemporary relevance. But what do you think? cheers DBaK (talk) 11:57, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't all shout at once. DBaK (talk) 10:13, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is an interested historical tidbit. Of course, it's as much a comment on Creighton's view of social norms as it is a comment on Embleton. Let's keep it in. Disclosure: I lived in Embleton for 18 years. cffk (talk) 13:17, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much Cffk for the reply. In view of that, and having had a year or two to consider it, I think I'd like not so much to remove it, then, as to rewrite and/or restructure to give it a bit more context, to balance it with the nicer things Creighton said about Embleton, and so on. When or even whether I'll get round to this is another question. I'm interested to hear that you lived there; I have connections there too but that's probably better discussed by email or something, not here. You almost certainly knew the "someone from Embleton" referred to at the start of this section, for instance. Cheers DBaK (talk) 21:28, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like a good plan. My years in Embleton were 1954-1972 (and I have only visited Embleton 3-4 times since then); this may govern whether or not we have an acquaintance in common. cffk (talk) 21:32, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good grief, Cffk, you're even older than me! Yes, we still probably do – just not the one I was originally thinking of! :) Cheers DBaK (talk) 19:11, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
