Move & Corrections

[edit]

I moved this page from Elvira Menéndez to Elvira Mendes, because that is the correct spelling of her name. She was of the line of the Counts of Portugal (House of Vímara Peres) and that is how it's spelled. I also added info on her father and descent. The Ogre 20:04, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Portugal-bio-stub

[edit]

I've reverted Muriel Gottrop deletion of Portugal-bio-stub. She says that there was no Portugal in 1022. That is in fact not true. The First County of Portugal was established in in 868 and Elvira Mendes was a member of the reignant family (that of Vímara Peres House). On the other hand one could argue, and I'm not really doing that..., that Spain, if you don't use that name to signify Iberia or Hispania, only exists after the union of Aragon and Castile (1492) and the incorporation of Navarre (1516). If by Portugal and Spain you mean the present political entities, then neither of them existed in 1022... The Ogre 14:32, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re correct spelling

[edit]

Re the remark above, Mendes and Menéndez are both correct spellings of her name and as such appears in secondary sources in Portuguese and Spanish, respectively. In primary sources, i.e., medieval charters, the name is spelled Menendi as can be confirmed in, for example:

  • Herculano, Alexandre (1868). Academia de Ciencias de Lisboa (ed.). Portugaliae Monumenta Historica: Diplomata et chartae. Vol. I. Lisbon: Olisipone. OCLC 504624362. {{cite book}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help).

Also, Elvira was not a descendant of Vímara Peres. This is due to a confusion with Elvira's great-grandmother Mumadona Dias whose mother Onecca, according to some sources, was erroneously identified as Onecca Lúcidez, daughter of Lucídio Vimaranes when, in fact, Onecca Lucides was the daughter of Lucidio Alvites, son of Alvito Lucídiz and grandson of Lucídio Vimaranes . See note a. in Mumadona's article and article on Lucídio Vimaranes for full explanation, as well as Mattoso and Sáez, both used as references.--Maragm (talk) 10:07, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
