Inappropriate tone
[edit]Here are some examples of inappropriate tone I see in the article (to add to what the maintenance tag says). There are some others as well that need to be corrected.
- "Probably the simplest component of a power system"
- "the digital devices you plug into the mains"
- "From the power system that supplies your home to the power system found in a car"
- "that's why your power plugs always have at least two tongs"
PleaseStand (talk) 20:20, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- The last one concerns me the most, I'll have to think of a better way to phrase that one. Cedars (talk) 13:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
Building wiring
[edit]Do we need yet another rehash of building wiring here? Shouldn't this article be about power systems, not "How to rewire your council flat so it can pass PAT testing" sort of thing? There's no generation going on in a house. --Wtshymanski (talk) 23:31, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Basics of electric power
[edit]Hi all,
I reverted to the earlier version of this section. The current version had a few problems and, although I have no doubt the earlier version could be better written, I did not have time to reconcile the two versions. Some of the problems:
Electric power is the product of current and voltage. These two quantities can vary with respect to time (AC power) or can be kept at constant levels (DC power).
Motors use AC power, electronics devices use DC power (converted from AC with a power supply).<one sentence paragraph>
AC power has the advantage of being easy to transform between voltages,<inappropriate comma> and can be generated and used by brushless generators and motors. power <first letter of a sentence should be a capital> can be transmitted over long distances with less loss at higher voltages. So in power systems where generation is distant from the load, it is desirable to step-up (increase) the voltage of power at the generation point and then step-down (decrease) the voltage near the load.
High-voltage direct current can be more economical to transmit power over long distances.[1][2]<one sentence paragraph>
DC power remains the only practical choice in electronic systems. Solid state devices, which are products of the semiconductor revolution, make it possible to transform DC power to different voltages, build brushless DC machines and convert between AC and DC power. [3]
