"Ei'ichi" or "Ei-ichi"? follow the sources?
[edit]Hi all,
- Per WP:MOS-JP, the preferred transliteration of 根岸英一 is the revised Hepburn "Ei'ichi".
- The subject of the article prefers "Ei-ichi"[1] as his name in English. Further on in MOS:JP, for names of modern figures#3, "Use the form publicly used on behalf of the person in the English-speaking world". Ghits for ""Ei-ichi Negishi" -wikipedia" turn up "About 106,000 results". Ghits for ""Ei'ichi Negishi" -wikipedia" turns up "About 106,000 results", and all non-trivial hits are for "Ei-ichi".
OK, so maybe his personal name should be romanised as "Ei'ichi Negishi". Nevertheless, the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth — whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true.
Your thoughts about this?--Shirt58 (talk) 12:23, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- If we follow revised Hepburn (the version recognized by MOS-JP), it should be Eiichi, without apostrophe. "Use of apostrophes should be avoided except in the case of the syllabic n ん." WP:MJ#Romanization. --Sushiya (talk) 12:05, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
