This was previously deleted from the article text but as it is of interest, I have placed it here:

I respectfully and totally disagree with the explanation above about "He couldn't keep her."

If we look at the different versions of this nursery rhyme, we will see that "couldn't keep her" meant that he couldn't control her. Furthermore, it is implied that he is "cuckold/impotent". To save his honor, he either "put her in a wall and let the mice eat her" (Scottish version), or "He put her in a pumpkin shell and there he kept her very well" (American version). We can make a politically correct modern version, but we shouldn't change history. (De Aton Goad) Rickedmo (talk) 10:56, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What this explanation needs is some verifiable sources. The existing explanation doesn't have them so I have deleted that. If we can find some sources we can put possible explanations back in.--SabreBD (talk) 23:06, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very sure that the two extra lines:

Ice cream, penny a lump,

The more you eat the more you jump.

are non-optional - if you know then they are always included, so I have re-instated the comment. I will not be offended if someone knows better and re-removes the comment. Rickedmo (talk) 01:52, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
