Emigrate cf. Immigrate

These verbs are commonly confused, and the confusion is intensified by the correlative nouns taking the prepositions opposite to the verbs.

An emigrant is someone who has permanently left a country of domicile.
An immigrant is someone who has permanently settled in a new country of domicile.

To emigrate is to go to another country.
To immigrate is to come from another country.

Thus:

Edward Dickens emigrated to Australia.
He was an emigrant from the United Kingdom.

Edward Dickens immigrated from the United Kingdom.
He was an immigrant to Australia.

Please pass it on -- the rules above, that is; not the fact Edward Dickens moved to Australia - very few people are going to care about that.
