Emigrate cf. Immigrate
[edit]These verbs are commonly confused, and the confusion is intensified by the correlative nouns taking the prepositions opposite to the verbs.
An emigrant is someone who has permanently left a country of domicile.
An immigrant is someone who has permanently settled in a new country of domicile.
To emigrate is to go to another country.
To immigrate is to come from another country.
Thus:
Edward Dickens emigrated to Australia.
He was an emigrant from the United Kingdom.
Edward Dickens immigrated from the United Kingdom.
He was an immigrant to Australia.
Please pass it on -- the rules above, that is; not the fact Edward Dickens moved to Australia - very few people are going to care about that.
