Ned: Disambiguted Title & the Lead

[edit]

"Commonly called Ned" is misleading or simply false.

"Edward Ned Daly" "Easter Rising"

gives "21 of about 35",

"Ned Daly" "Easter Rising"

(which includes the 21 above) gives "70 of about 161", leaving 49 of 126 for "Ned Daly" without "Edward" immediately preceding, and

"Edward Daly" "Easter Rising"

gives "143 of about 286".
Ignoring clones, we have 70 plain Ned, twice as many (143) plain Edward, and, out of 234 total, 91, or less than 39% mentioning "Ned" at all.
Calling him

Edward "Ned" Daly is fine, but there's no reason for making a bigger thing of the nickname than that. In particular, using Edward (Ned) Daly as the disambiguated name is ugly and unnatural, evokes the style of WP Dab titles too much for something that doesn't conform to that style, and is far less informative than Edward Daly (executed) (or perhaps some other equally terse title). I find "executed" attractive bcz it excludes so many other Edward Daly's (probably without the title being applicable to any other notable people), and bcz "Easter Rising", phrases that include "Irish" or "Ireland", etc. need more words to do the job.

Edward Daly (Irish Republican Brotherhood)

[edit]

Scolaire could you please explain why you reverted my re-direct of this article. I gave a clear rational, which is supported by the article text. I note that no comment or rational was given for this, and would like one now thanks. I have no problem with the use of WP:BRD, except when it is not followed up with a talk page contrabution. How is an editor to know what was wrong with the change in the absence of a rational or comment.--Domer48'fenian' 13:07, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See my response at the Tom Clark talk page. --Scolaire (talk) 13:43, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be possible to move this page back to Ned Daly per Common Name. This is the name he himself used and was know by both family and friends? --Domer48'fenian' 09:21, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It might be. It would be worth leaving this a few days to see if anybody has any views. In the meantime I am moving it back to Edward Daly (Irish revolutionary) per discussion. Scolaire (talk) 12:56, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
