Comments

[edit]

Well, this is a very nice article about Vainio, lucid, well-structured, informative, and fully-cited, so I have only the most minor of comments to make. I've made some very minor adjustments to the English grammar of the article.

  • Wikilink Lichen in first paragraph.
Ok. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "was characteristic of his later work" - consider saying "would be" or "became" as it hadn't yet happened.
Done. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Finnish language: so he didn't like speaking Finnish. He spoke Swedish then? Or Russian? I see he published in French and Latin, so perhaps that is what is intended?
I hope this edit clarifies things. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Monikers - still sounds rather slangy and unencyclopedic, and it's not even necessary. Why not just say "he has been named the "Father of...".
I removed this instance from the lead. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Same in 'Recognition' where the word occurs again ("Lynge called him the 'Grand ...'").
Swapped "moniker" out for "sobriquet"; does this assuage your concerns? Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • and become his brother-in-law. Well, yes, if he married Vainio's sister that couldn't be avoided, so it's redundant.
Ok. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • many new Cladonia species. It would be nice to gloss this for readers. Perhaps "the mainly ground-living genus Cladonia", or "the genus that includes 'reindeer moss'", something like that.
Done. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Vainio's choice of language for his publications" - again, please explain, as in lead section.
I added a Nylander quote that I think shows why he thought Finnish was inappropriate for scientific publication. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Germain" - Isn't he usually known as "Lacépède"?
Yes, fixed. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • 3 images of Graphis: these are too small to see well. I suggest you arrange them vertically and make the images a good bit larger.
Done; much better. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Selected publications: There's no need to repeat "Wainio, Edvard August" all the way down, you can use "|author-mask=---" or similar so the name only occurs once and is then replaced with --- for the remaining entries; same for all the "Vainio" entries, that name can be listed once and then followed by --- again for the rest.
I didn't know this trick, thanks! Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • References: Linkola 1939 is missing. So is Linkola 1998. So is Vitikainen (and it needs a date). So is Linklater 1934.
Silly citation errors, now fixed.

This is the complete set of changes I've made in response to your helpful review and comments. Esculenta (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the kind remarks, and the prompt response. I'm happy to pass this article now, and hope you will take the time to review one or two articles from the GAN queue. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:38, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
