Year of birth

Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians and her Times obituary give Coates's year of birth as 1908, but the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and the England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915 give the year as 1905. It was not unusual in the early 20th century for performers to knock a few years off their actual ages: see pages iii and iv of Parker, John (1925). Who's Who in the Theatre (fifth ed.).
