A declaration of what might be conceived as a potential conflict of interest by the initial author of this article:

My name is Dr Marc van Loo. After gaining a PhD (started in Amsterdam and finished in Singapore) in mathematical physics (cosmology), I moved to education, both at university and secondary level, at private and government institutions.

I took up position of Coordinator of Critical Thinking at Nanyang Technological University around 1997 until about 2004, and took up an interest in making science teaching socially and personally relevant, as well as a great interest in outdoor education as a means to enhance general education and character education.

I am the chief editor of the [first independent guide on the International Baccalaureate], published by Cambridge University Press, and in 2000 I founded [LooLa Adventure Resort] in Bintan, Indonesia, close to Singapore, with the objective of creating a eco-friendly sustainable resort that should cater chiefly to schools, CSR-sensitive companies, and families with an interest in visiting the real Indonesia.

Naturally, my own resort features in the article below because i am proud of what we achieved, but the information presented in this article is to the best of my information factual. I do believe that far more attention should be paid to eco-tourism in our area of the world, in the best interest of the communities and business owners. By presenting the facts, I hope to give good information to people interested in this matter, and I hope it may eventually help a little bit to encourage further growth of eco-tourism in our part of the world. I have attempted to come up with outside sources for some of the claims I make, but that proved hard in some cases. Nonetheless, the facts presented in the article should be sufficient for verification for those more tenacious than I have been.
