Fair use rationale for Image:Image eco.jpg

Image:Image eco.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Assertion of copyright infringement

Although there has not been any detailed description of why the article has been tagged by a user as potentially containing third-party IP, it appears that the claim is the article uses material from the http://www.ecochallenge.us website. The material on the website expressly permits reproduction on the wikipedia and subsequent modification of such materials. See http://www.racingwithgiants.com/Ecochallenge/Site%20Map.html

Unfortunately that permission is not clear enough. There need a specific statement that the material (not facts) is released under the GFDL or that the material is in the Public domain. Especially since there was a non-commercial medium clause on that page. Material on Wikipedia can be used non-commercially and commercially. Garion96 (talk) 12:47, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

As a general note, when asserting copyright infringment, a user should identify with reasonable specificity the suspect material and the reason for believing the material is subject to copyright or other IP protection.

That was already done a while ago when someone placed the {{copyvio}} tag on the article. Which, for that matter, also stated quite clearly "Do not edit this page until an administrator has resolved this issue". Of course removing the tag does not remove the listing on Wikipedia:Copyright problems which is how I discovered the article. Nevertheless, the permisson is now clear so I restored the article. Merely tagging an article with the {{copyvio}} tag provides does not, by itself, provide clear guidance as to the what portion of the material is viewed as objectionable or the rational for believing material is infringing third party IP, etc.. A clear description of the issue in a discussion page or otherwise can expedite correction of problems. Also note, that someone removing a copy violation tag may be grounds for action against the user in question, but certainly not grounds for deleting an article. Suggestions for cleanup?

Hi, I'm interested in working on referencing this a bit better and cleaning up the structure. Feel free to respond below with suggestions. I'll chip away at this as I have time. BWatkins 15:42, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

It would be great to have this work done. I don't have particularly good ideas about structuring, but obvious clean up could include breaking out a history of the race section, a section dedicated to the actual races that were held, an expanded citation section, and a section containing published works on the topic. (I think that the existing trivia section adds little value, and probably isn't consistent with the goals of wikipedia).

One of the reasons I believe better structure is lacking is that the article is rather bare bones; I suspect a better structure would follow if the article was expanded. For example, it could be significantly expanded with a more detailed history of how the event was created, including its relationship with the Raid and Gerald Fusil. More detailed information about each race could be added, including information on venues, costs to participate, logistics, environmental impact, etc. Sources for the information could include Martin Dugard's book, Surviving the Toughest Race on Earth; John Markman's LA Times Article and material from www.ecochallenge.us

To the extent that there is material that you think would be of interest to the reader, but not appropriate for a wikipedia article, such a videos, etc, arrangements can be made to post it on the Ecochallenge site referenced in the article [http:www.ecochallenge.us](there is a significant backlog of photos, maps, etc. that will be posted there when time permits).
