Partial rewrite needed

The fourth sentence of this article is almost completely unreadable. I understand enough molecular biology to be able to grasp most articles on the topic, but this sentence in particular (starting with "The peptidase M13 family..." and ending with "...an activated water molecule") just reads like word salad.
