Still Life with Beer and Fruit

[edit]

I show that the painting is a work of Vincent van Gogh:

If this site, sanctioned by the Van Gogh Museum, is wrong (i.e., highly reliable, but like all matters van Gogh one that always has the potential for mystery and error), who's painting is it? Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:52, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is all very strange. I found the link to an article written in German from the "history" of the article changes. It says that the authenticity (or artist) was contested at an exhibition in 1987. After x-rays, etc. it was decided in October, 2010 that van Gogh had not made the painting and that the Wuppertal museum had classified the artist as unknown. However, I'm unable to find a news article or other information, other than a couple of blog entries that stated that the Beer and Fruit painting is not Van Gogh's work. I tried looking on the Wuppertal museum site but couldn't figure out how to search for paintings by artist. Sites that sell van Gogh reproductions still classify this as a Van Gogh painting (not a definitive clue, nor likely one to be used to sort this out, but an interesting one.)
Then, when I go to the German article sources, the image in the article (of two in question) is not the painting in question. For now, it seems wise to leave the painting out, but I wonder if there's a conclusive way to sort this out?
See de:Stillleben mit Krug und Birnen, -> unknown artist, can not be determined. Note: "Stillleben mit Kaffeetopf und Blumen" (Picture) isn't also not a Work of van Gogh. --Atamari (talk) 18:53, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The expertise comes from the Van Gogh Museum, Netherland... --Atamari (talk) 18:56, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure you're right. I'm just the curious kind of gal that then googles to find out more about the situation - how did it come to be considered a VG in the first place, what were the definitive markers that it's not VG, those kinds of things. And, it's just very hard to find out any info except from a couple of German articles (3-4 total when you include the 2 on the de wikipedia site) and blogs. You'd think it would hit international press is all. And, the Van Gogh Museum doesn't seem to have any sort of article, notation, etc. about this. It's just very strange that it's not verifiable in English, and there's no picture of the painting in question in the German articles, isn't it? Not meaning to give you a hard time, like I say it's probably right. It's just very weird.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:49, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The above website, valuable of a resource as it is, has been wrong before....heck, there are even paintings at the VGM itself which are contested. Until you had mentioned it, I never gave the painting much thought....but as it stands, it bears no resemblance to other Van Gogh works, even of the same year. I'd also be curious to see how it was ever attributed to the artist...--Chimino (talk) 06:36, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I went ahead and removed the painting from the List of works by Vincent van Gogh‎ and on the Still Life with Beer Mug and Fruit removed the vvg categories, stated the painting is not considered a vvg article and provided the German link.--CaroleHenson (talk) 12:55, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Vase with Flowers, Coffeepot and Fruit in the List of works by Vincent van Gogh is the second painting, according to the expertise of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam is not from van Gogh (see sources in Stillleben mit Krug und Birnen). --Atamari (talk) 18:46, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks so much for the reminder!!! That was one I saw an image for - as soon as I can figure out its F# I'll take care of it, too.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:03, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ... and Van Gogh works by date? --Atamari (talk) 19:34, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't know what you mean. Do you mind taking care of it?--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:42, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my failure. I see an article on the picture page commons:File:Van Gogh - Vase mit Blumen, Kaffeekanne und Früchte.jpeg (-> [1]) --Atamari (talk) 19:49, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I don't know how to go about updating information in the commons. It was fun, though, to see this link and know it's place to double-check against for the few remaining image-less rows on the List of Works. Cool!--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:09, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Strange, there is a redirect from Pollard Willow to Early works of Vincent van Gogh. I know Van Gogh painted willows, but pollard willow should have an article itself or redirect to willow, as it is a kind of willow. Salix2 (talk) 16:39, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
