Efficacy

[edit]

I am surprised that this product hasn't been more extensively tested. In my own observations using commercial coin-operated dryers over many years, I find that I can reduce the cost of a dryer load by 25 cents (10 minutes) when using a couple of dryer balls. It's hard to do a rigorous experiment though, since laundry loads aren't identical, but the dryer balls do seem to have a minor effect on drying time. I have no idea about fabric softening; I never use fabric softeners and my dryer balls are either the wooly kind or the spiked plastic kind. ~Anachronist (talk) 02:28, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anachronist, I've been pouring through academic, news, and scholarly sources to try and find any criticism but it seems most sources just take the manufacturers' statements/cultural belief as fact. ~Gwennie🐈💬 📋06:05, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I do remember hearing in the past, before anyone started selling dryer balls, that putting tennis balls in the dryer can also reduce drying time. Maybe it's true, and some companies just capitalized on that, and came up with designs they thought might work better. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:10, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
