[edit]There are problems listed with drag and drop, but I think they are meant for the X implementation, and since this article is about drag/drop the concept, those problems should be removed from this discussion.

Which ones do you mean? Today, the listed problems are "the same button selects and drags items" and "the target of the dropping can be hidden under other objects". Both appear at least under Windows, too. JöG 21:39, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
cartoon
[edit]I added this cartoon just bc it illustrates the notion from another perspective :) I am not the author of that cartoon, and I have nothing to do with its authors. its at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Dragndrop.png Towsonu2003 08:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Patents & Awards
[edit]Drag-and-drop is so powerful I wonder if there have been any awards or patents given to it. I'd like to know. FreddyMack 14:11, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- yes, Apple France gave me an award for it in 1990, then Apple bought it, from me, and imposed a press embargo, only one article was published, before apple decided to buy it.
- see https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-bb92e45e1698792a8b187e04bf26621e
- it was my idea, as you can see in this article, to create files when dragging to the desktop, and importing files from the finder when dragging to application windows (and of course dragging between windows)
- i have to admit that i still prefer copy paste myself :D
- it would be nice to, someday, mention all this on this wikipedia page, but, until now, no succès, as i don't have the contract anymore, this was a very long time ago, i was 21 years old, and, the web didn't exist, no article was ever written mentioning that Apple bought it from me, don't tell anyone ;-) but i'm not even allowed to talk about this publicly, i guess Apple didn't want it to be known that such a fundamental feature of the Mac's UI was invented in Belgium, that more or less ruined my life.
- i'm 55 now, i think i deserve to be recognized for this before i die
- one Apple bought it, they registered a few patents, i think under Nick Kledziks name (not 100% sure about the spelling, we called him the ice man), i worked in mariani 1, in the Finder Team to integrate my code with Mac OS, that code was probably rewritten later, as my code had to work "outside" of apple, as a system extension, and Apple could just offer this as an API for developers
- the drag and drop Apple bought from me also contained the "Viewer" that allowed to view documents directly in the Finder, Adobe wasn't happy as they were just releasing the PDF standard, and they forced (black mailed) Apple to abandon that idea, it resurfaced as QuickView in OS X
- i also wrote Macintosh Easy Open, allowing applications to open files from other applications, via file converters, this was abandoned when transitioning to OS X, sadly
- i think that file formats and applications should dissapear, one file format, paper, and tools. you pay for the tools to edit files, but anyone can view documments containing any type of data for free
- anyway, that is another story alltogether.
- i still have the Award, i can post a picture somewhere. but i will probably never find the contract Martijn Scheffer (talk) 04:04, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Drag and drop history
[edit]Are there any sources to the claim that Aporia was the first Windows program to support drag and drop? As this feature first appeared on Mac I'm sure that others tried to implement it on Windows at the same time as Aporia. For now I changed the sentence from "The first drag & drop implementation was..." to "Jeffrey Greenberg claims that the first drag & drop implementation was...".—Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.143.162.227 (talk • contribs)
- Drag and drop was old news on the Mac and even on the Commodore Geos by 1986. Edison (talk) 15:49, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- during the integration of drag and drop in system 7.5 major developpers, like Microsoft were told about it, so that they would adapt they applications, Word, Excel to use it, microsoft added the feature to windows asap after that. Martijn Scheffer (talk) 04:07, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Band-boxing
[edit]I added a mention of band-boxing to the article. This could (maybe) be expanded into its own article, but I left it here since it's partially relevant, and I'm not interested in writing the article. Please leave comments on my user page. SharkD (talk) 18:38, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Screenshot?
[edit]This is still listed at Category:Wikipedia_requested_screenshots, but does it still need to be? It looks like we have a screen-shot/animation. --NerdBoy1392 <Talk|Contribs> 16:24, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Touchsreens
[edit]Could we mention that the action is not supported on most touch screens? That is only supported on trackball, or mouse UIs? Mathiastck (talk) 16:21, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
