Name changes

[edit]

This tournament has been known as the "Dow Corning Tennis Classic" only since 2004. Should the article include its earlier history under other names?

Using http://ustauniversityonline.learn.com/files/pdf/7_Women_7s_Match_Results.pdf as a source we have

  • From 1989 to 1995 listed as – Women's $25,000 Challenger Series – Midland, MI
  • In 1996 and 1997 it was known as – Women's $50,000 Challenger Series – Midland, MI
  • Starting in 1998 the USTA apparently allowed tournaments to be named after the sponsors.
  • 1998: Women's $50,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning USTA Women's Challenger of Midland – Midland, MI
  • 1999: Women's $75,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning/USTA Women's Challenger of Midland – Midland, MI
  • 2000: Women's $75,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning/USTA Challenger of Midland – Midland, MI
  • 2001: Women's $75,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning/USTA Women's Challenger – Midland, MI
  • 2002: Women's $75,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning/USTA Women's Challenger – Midland, MI
  • 2003: Women's $75,000 Challenger Series – Dow Corning/USTA Women's Challenger – Midland, MI
  • 2004: Dow Corning Tennis Classic – Midland, MI ($75,000)

I don't know if the slightly different used in 2000 was an error in the source document or if the tournament name changed for one year.

Searching the Google News archives for Dow Corning USTA Women's Challenger of Midland shows that name being used from 1998 to 2004.

A similar search for "Dow Corning Tennis Classic" shows that name started being used in January 2004 and is used up to the present.

The news reporting of the tournament names is less consistent in earlier years. Part of the issue here would be less coverage is available on-line and that at the time this was just one of over 100 stops on the circuit meaning it would not have had widespread coverage.

  • "Challenger Series" Midland tennis – only 9 hits with none that are useful
  • I tried to find mention of the 1989 results by by searching Gale CENGAGE for: 'tennis "Shaun Stafford" "Meredith McGrath" Midland' There was only one hit which was a June 24, 1990 New York Times article "WIMBLEDON '90; The Draw" reporting on the draw for men's and women's singles. "Midland" got in there because Meredith McGrath is from there.

Here are the full results from source document linked at the top of this message with some corrections added.
