Doolally Tap is actually a British/Indian Gurkha expression from the campaigns on the North West border of India. Due to the combination of heat and altitude, the Gurkhas were prone to bouts of a type of altitude sickness, in which the casualty displays confusion and what might be mistaken for mental illness. These soldiers were moved back to the closest British Army Hospital at Doolally. Tap is Gurkhali for illness. The soldiers returning from the field were therefore going to Doolally Hospital, but the British soldier would have seen what looked like mad soldiers, who it was explained by their Gurkha comrades were going Doolally Tap.
