  • ... that Donald R. Morris was inspired to write The Washing of the Spears, his history of the Anglo-Zulu War, after a chance encounter with Ernest Hemingway while serving in the US Navy in Cuba? "The idea for the book came from a chance encounter with Ernest Hemingway in Cuba in 1955," from: Knight, Ian. "Obituary - Donald R. Morris" (PDF). Anglo Zulu War Historical Society. Retrieved 21 July 2021.
    • ALT1:... that Donald R. Morris wrote most of The Washing of the Spears during a five-year CIA posting to Berlin, at the time of the construction of the Berlin Wall? "He spent five years in counterespionage activities in Berlin, and was there when the Wall went up ... Most of it was written during his time in Berlin" from: Knight, Ian. "Obituary - Donald R. Interesting bio, on few but good sources, no copyvio obvious. I like the Anglo-Zulu war mentioned in a hook, but find the CIA in Berlin telling us more about him than a chance meeting, and perhaps would even prefer his new perspective on the War. Would you play with the bits, please? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:13, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gerda Arendt, I thought it a little long but here you go - Dumelow (talk) 18:25, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ALT2:... that Donald R. Morris wrote most of The Washing of the Spears, his history of the Anglo-Zulu War, during a five-year CIA posting to Berlin at the time of the construction of the Berlin Wall?
ALT2a: ... that Donald R. Morris wrote most of The Washing of the Spears, his history of the Anglo-Zulu War, while he worked for the CIA in Berlin when the Berlin Wall was built?
(thinking that the exact years in Berlin don't matter so much, - open for more ALTs)
